Exotic?

Yeah, I have to question that too. I have yet to find that exotic experience in Austin...And I'm from there.

Outdoor activities are somewhat overrated here, even in the Texas Hill Country, and next month would be the worst possible time for it. Go for Boston and its great history.

Thanks for the replies guys! Looks like i'll be heading to Boston!

Is there a specific area of Boston that'd be best to stay? I was thinking either downtown or back bay

OP, you are doing the right thing going to Boston in August!

I've lived in Austin for 26 years and I love it but Augusts are hard, and thunderstorms are rare unless there is tropical activity. Our nights DO NOT COOL DOWN. I walk my dog evening between 9:30 and 10:30 pm and in August the temp is almost always still above 90, sometimes well above. Our coolest temps will be in the hour before sunrise, 77 if we are lucky, 79-81 if we are not. Day time highs above 100 are not unusual. Boston will be more interesting and more livable in August, now if you were coming in February, than I'd strongly favor Austin.

About weather: to be fair, I don't remember the last day here in Boston that wasn't a high in the 90s. With the humidity we have, it's been terrible. We have to be going on two weeks straight now. It's no fun.

Honestly, I wouldn't stay "downtown" (anywhere in or near the Financial District or Boston Common). I think Back Bay would be pretty cool. Back Bay is "classic Boston" with charming architecture and a ton going on.

Some street views:

If you don't do that, look into perhaps Kenmore Square or Charlestown.

Boston offers the more classic experience of American culture, seen particularly through its history (being that it was a prominent city in colonial times). Austin, in contrast, will be less classical (through local culture and cuisine), allowing the tourists a broader mind of what America entails.
There is no "typical American experience" really seeing how diverse the country is overall.

Austin isn't really "exotic" at all.

Not sure about the outdoor culture, especially in the summer. Eastern Mass has some very nice parks, plus the Boston Harbor Islands, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket. It's a city on the ocean with a beautiful river. I'm sure Austin has some very nice areas, but having the ocean alone is a major plus in the summer.

Uhhh, definitely go to Boston over Austin. I could see visiting Boston and/or DC, but Austin? The only people that visit Austin are there for SXSW or family. lol Seriously, go to Boston and dont give Austin a second thought, youll thank me later.
