It seems that Hawaii has a defense industry more along the lines of Columbus, GA, Fayetteville, NC and Virginia Beach, VA rather than Northern Virginia or Southern California. Military spending is important to the economy of the first three places, but I wouldn't call that "industry" per se.

At the end of the day im sure the OP is looking for a balance of being able to work with many options available and also be comfortable in his environment.
In this case honolulu is really more of one thing than the other by far.

You are right as the OP was not specific which is exactly why I said Honolulu is not necessarily the best fit as career is more limited by industry.
Compared to other cities defense makes up a bigger part of the workforce and economy of Honolulu. Yeah Honolulu has a much smaller economy as it's only a million people, I think that is pretty obvious.

New Mexico - 19%
Ohio - 18%

Texas - 12%
Maine - 11%
Illinois - 10%
New Jersey - 10%
Virginia - 9%
Idaho - 8%
Iowa - 8%
Minnesota - 6%
Nebraska - 6%
Kansas - 5%
Hawaii - 4%
Indiana - 4%
Michigan - 4%
Nevada - 3%
Mississippi - 2%
Montana - 2%
Louisiana - 1%

Most defense spending in Hawaii goes towards construction, supplies and general services. The same is true of Alaska. DoD does most of its R&D spending in California, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Texas, and Virginia.

-Lockheed Martin spent $13.3 billion in Texas.
-Boeing spent $7.4 billion in Missouri.
-Northup Grumman spent $5.5 billion in Virginia.
-Raytheon spent $4.5 billion in Massachusetts.
-Boeing spent $1.8 billion in Washington.
-Northop spent $1.9 billion in Mississippi.
-Lockheed spent $1.8 billion in New Jersey.
-Lockheed spent $1.7 billion in New York.
-BAE Systems spent $945 million in New Hampshire
-BAE Systems spent $150 million in Hawaii

Doesn't really seem like the % of people who work in more white collar industries/professions is much different than the national averages:
