It seems that Hawaii has a defense industry more along the lines of Columbus, GA, Fayetteville, NC and Virginia Beach, VA rather than Northern Virginia or Southern California. Military spending is important to the economy of the first three places, but I wouldn't call that "industry" per se.

Exactly my point. There is a lot of military there but not like defense where weapons, airplanes, tanks, radars are built
I did not "act" as if anything.Defense is not a major industry in Honolulu compared to other cities which is my point in general.Sure they have industry and business but its not varied,
At the end of the day im sure the OP is looking for a balance of being able to work with many options available and also be comfortable in his environment.
In this case honolulu is really more of one thing than the other by far.
You are right as the OP was not specific which is exactly why I said Honolulu is not necessarily the best fit as career is more limited by industry.
Compared to other cities defense makes up a bigger part of the workforce and economy of Honolulu. Yeah Honolulu has a much smaller economy as it's only a million people, I think that is pretty obvious.

Which aslo should be "obvious" why it may not be the best because it is small
