For as "racist" and "backwoods" that people are implying West Virginia is, I challenge you to find me a city in Mississippi that's as educated, vibrant, or prosperous as Morgantown, WV is. Partially because it's home to WVU, and partially because it's very close to Pittsburgh, Morgantown is a liberal oasis within an otherwise socially conservative state.
Mississippi. It's prettier, it has an ocean, it has more culture, it has better food, and while it gets this rep for being the most racist state in the USA..west Virginia is definitely racist as hell.
While both Mississippi and West Virginia can be subjected to many criticisms, I find this truly extreme. There is a reason Nina Simone wrote this song.

I'm talking about the 21st century. Obviously Mississippi has the absolute darkest/sickening history when it comes to racism.
It's within much of our lifetimes and it doesn't go away that quickly. Social media is not reality, tweeting is reality only when you have your head in a box. West Virginia is NOT the most racist state because of idiotic counts of "tweets" or Google search terms.
West Virginia is #47 among states that use Twitter, Mississippi is #50, no one in their right mind can use such a source to determine such a terrible status as "most racist".
WV certainly has more scenic beauty, but I'd choose MS myself, either Jackson or the Memphis 'burbs.
Pretty much this and I'd probably add the Gulf(Biloxi, Gulfport, Ocean Springs, Moss Point, Pascagoula, etc), Hattiesburg, Starkville and Oxford in terms of places to live in MS. The last 3 are major college towns.
In terms of WV, probably the Charleston area(has an HBCU in WV State University and places like Dunbar/Institute/Rand/Malden and Charleston have Black percentages around or above the national percentage), Huntington, Beckley(is about 25% Black), NC WV(Morgantown/Clarksburg/Fairmont), the Eastern Panhandle(Martinsburg, Charles Town, Ranson, Shepherdstown, etc(all are about 10-15% Black) and some of which is in the DC metro) and maybes for Bluefield(home to HBCU Bluefield State and is also about 25% Black), Wheeling and Weirton. With the last 2, their proximity to Pittsburgh and to a lesser degree Cleveland may help.
McDowell and Fayette counties in WV have small towns with Black percentages around/above the national percentage, including some that are predominately Black in McDowell County. White Sulpher Springs in Greenbrier County has a Black percentage around the national percentage as well.

I may throw the coast in just for quicker access to NOLA.

Yes, that is a very good point and access to beaches doesn't hurt. It seems to be relatively more "liberal" than much of the rest of the state perhaps due to the proximity to New Orleans and the visible French/Catholic influence.
West Virginia:
I like the Mountains, beautiful fall colors, and there are some places in WV which are only an hour or so away from DC. Plus I'd rather not live in a state that has the confederate flag on their state flag lol.
Location: Metro Atlanta (Sandy Springs), by way of Macon, GA

Considering that Mississippi is the "blackest" state by % (nearly 40%) and WV is about 3% black, I'd say they cant be that similar.
