So Columbia, rather than Lawrence, would be the more likely choice here.

But it's also worth recognizing that the disparity between in-state and out-of-state tuition, combined with the decline of the traditional family structure (more divorces, step-families, etc.) is likely more of a factor than was once the case.

There are a little over 100 universities with R1 research status and Temple and U of Delaware are R 1 in the Philly MSA .

for metros with more than one division-1 school, which one is more associated with the city.

I think the ones closest to downtown and have the largest student body would because you would be more likely to run into them at a restaurant or at the ball park. I think prestige only helps the popular schools (tourist rarely lookup u.s. news and world report rankings).

Because Harvard, MIT and Brown are all ranked higher than those schools. The poster only counted the top 3.

Oh I know the geography. But Lawrence, KS is especially close to the KCMO metro area, and thus is able to be counted as part of the KC metro in extended definitions.
