Vegas & Miami probably have the best strips and nightlife but overall my top 5
1]NYC-LA tossup,Better weather gives L.A a slight edge in year round activities.
2]Chicago & Houston is another tossup but Chicago night life is better.
3]San Francisco
4] D.C
5] Philadelphia
No way Houston is top 5. Have you ever been there?

Lol been to Houston twice and it's the Premiere city in Texas.Growing as the fasest 2nd city in America today.
It's not better than the others on the list far as excitement but it is massive and has alot of things to explore.
In stats Houston is this in a huge spread out city and suburbs. Dallas might argue #2 ? But its Core is what brings it down.
With Basically the thread title asking of things to do that in general is a city's Core or DOWNTOWN outward. This is where Houston fails. It has a downtown with pretty impressive shiny skyscrapers and huge bland parking garages. It does have a gorgeous looking Aquarium downtown. But nothing around it. It is basically you drive to work downtown, into the garage, a tunnel to the office building, then back and home.
They have a Main street (its name). It has a new Tram-line there and buses on others. But no real shopping retail. Some eateries, drugstore and such. With a couple blocks with some Old Houston left with some Bar restaurants and not enough Old Houston left, but you wish there was much much more of it preserved and filled with attractions. There is a indoor entertainment complex downtown. But to see it from the outside, it is like no hint there is life there. There are Theaters that offer live shows.
But overall, no where near what the other cities offer in their cores on street-level and in street-life. Is there offerings throughout the city and suburbs? Of course, but having a downtown core that actually looks sterile after work hours and deserted. Brings Houston down in so many list on C-D. Houston sort of is a poster-boy of NOT how to GROW a downtown with NO ZONING or PLAN and REMOVE its OLD ASPECTS with LACKING PRESERVATION and PROMOTE a Main retail street in a downtown should have.
I generalize but that is the impression. Hopefully more comes as live-in residents high-rises are getting added. This is not to say the Houston area overall isn't a great place to live, growing for a reason and offerings throughout. Infill is also adding density to inner areas replacing spread out smaller Ranch homes on slabs.

Houston is a terrible excuse for a city. It's a perfect example for what suburbs can aspire to be and that's it. I mean come on who says "Oh I would love to see Houston" or "I hear Houston is such a great place to visit". Basically no one ever.

Nukua, where would you rank Houston ?
As someone who has been there a lot and works with companies and vendors (oil) where groups are always making trips back and forth between Chicago and Houston - I hear nonstop the Houston people droning on how there's so much to do in Chicago and aside from the weather they're so much more excited to come to Chicago than they are to find things to do hosting people in Houston.
Houston is ok I guess, but it's just so...ordinary? You can find fun things to do, but a lot of it is pretty vanilla and you have to look around a bit.
I feel in Chicago there's just so much packed into the central and lakefront areas of the city it's all compact and endless as far as things to do.
Downtown Chicago has made leaps and bounds the past 10-15 years. Just cleaning everything up, dozens upon dozens of hew highrises. Tens of thousands of new residents driving up the number of restaurants and shopping, tons of new hotels.
Throw in a revamped Navy Pier, the new Riverwalk, Maggie Daley Park, Millennium Park, Northerly Island, etc. etc.
It's what creates a world of difference between there and places like Houston.
Not to knock Houston....but just because you have a growing population doesn't make it full of amenities and things to do. Especially having those grouped close together where you don't need to drive at all.

Houston would fall in the Top Ten, but after NYC, LA, Chicago, DC, Boston, SF and Philly for sure. Those cities alone have much more to do than Houston and more variety as well.

I didn't want to weigh in on the rankings, but I'm not certain if you symbol on the top 10. In no particular order, I would put the following cities above Houston:
NY
LA
Chicago
DC
Philly
Miami
SF
Boston
And possibly:
Seattle
Atlanta
New Orleans
Las Vegas
The following cities offer less, but probably have more ease of use:
Minneapolis
Detroit
Denver
Pittsburgh
