Orginally from Michigan and lived in DC previously. I'm in my early 20s, married, and have kids. I need somewhere that would be good for jobs, I'm a bartender, and would be a good place to raise kids and that's not Miami expensive because its too stressful. I don't have a preference really about the weather.
Based on the OPs Criteria I would Reluctantly say Houston, Better in the Jobs department and Affordable less stressful place to Raise Kids, Me Personally I like Chicago better even with all its issues

Median Housing prices in Houston and Chicago are essentially the same. How many times does this need to be repeated?

What bartender wants to live 30-40 miles outside of the city? Apples to apples urban neighborhoods are probably a better comparison.

You can tell the same BS over and over again, but it doesn't get true just because you say it more.

Chicago makes Miami not look racist.

If you guys are really interested in comparing housing costs, we HAVE to define which neighborhoods are similar to others.

Doing what the poster above did proved nothing other than you can go to the far edge of a city where terrible neighborhoods separate you from the core and things are cheaper.

Having lived both places, I would say look at the below:

Gold Coast=Midtown
Lincoln Park/North Halsted=Montrose
Wicker Park=The Heights
Lakeview=Post Oak

Its hard to compare neighborhoods because the cities are so different, but that's a start.
