Hello! This is my first post on the forums and I'd love to get some feedback on my situation. I currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm ending a long-term relationship and I need to make some major changes in my life. I have job offers in both San Diego and Honolulu, and I'm having trouble deciding.

Some background info: I'm a nurse and a photographer. The job is San Diego is part-time and would allow me time to focus on growing my photography business (something that has fallen by the wayside due to this relationship situation). However, I worry that I will be struggling financially until business picks up. The job pays decent, but it still won't go far in San Diego, and I might need to take on another part-time job for a while.

The job in Honolulu is full-time, and the salary offer is better than I expected. However, the job has a lot of responsibility that comes with it, and I worry that I won't have the time to focus on my photography like I want to. My family lives on the East Coast, and I also worry about the distance and how I will handle it. But I know that I would enjoy the climate and culture of Honolulu more than San Diego and I am excited about the possibility of living there much more overall than San Diego. Without all of the other factors to consider, it would be a dream come true.

With so many pros and cons to each, it's a tough choice for me! Any feedback from those that have lived in both cities? Thanks in advance!

Go for the dream come true. I'm a photographer too and if you always keep an extra body on you, you'll hardly miss a good opportunity. Being somewhere like Hawaii will give you more energy to go out and shoot. Whatever you subject matter may be.

Honolulu sounds the like the better choice, personally (to you) and financially.

Are you thinking a permanent move or maybe just a few years? If I were in your position, and was thinking of a move for just a few years or less I might go with Honolulu. Hawaii would be a great place to live.... for a time. But personally, I know I would get island fever sooner or later, and would need to return to the mainland. It's very isolated. It's not like you can "get out" of the area and take a road trip somewhere different for the weekend.

San Diego, OTOH, is obviously on the mainland. Cheaper, quicker flights to the East Coast and everywhere else, even if it's not quite as scenic or idyllic of a paradise as Hawaii. Even getting a vehicle can be a total PITA from what I hear.

Also, I know you said the Hawaii job pays more, but have you factored in the elevated cost of everything in Hawaii compared to California? Housing may be in the same ballpark, but groceries, utilities, gas...all that is going to be much more expensive in Hawaii. And even small things you may not think about, like getting things shipped to you, may cost more.

So, my advice is that if the finances make sense, and you are committed to embracing an island culture and lifestyle 100%, choose Hawaii. If not, go for San Diego.

San Diego, the limiting factor of the island would not be good for me.

I would go to San Diego personally, but it sounds like you are leaning towards Honolulu, and you really can't go wrong with either place, so go to Honolulu. Enjoy.

If your photog work is top tier, San Diego.
If you're still learning photography, Hawaii and just become a hobbyist.
