Both are smaller cities with a tourism economy and somewhat seedy reputations. Which would you choose in terms of....

Tourism

Crime

Walkability

Location

Education

Affordability

Outdoor amenities(inc. proximity)

Culture(people, events, etc.)

If you can think of anything else, you can add it.

Tourism- Niagara Falls has 3 times as many visitors annualy(12 million+) than the Atlantic City Boardwalk(4 million), although I'm not sure how many visitors the American Falls itself gets. Overall Niagara Falls

Crime- Similar, but Atlantic City has more crime

Walkability- Atlantic City is a little denser, but Niagara Falls has bit better public transportation. Overall draw.

Location- Niagara Falls is 30 mins from Buffalo, 15 mins from Niagara Falls, Canada and 1hr 40 mins from Toronto. Atlantic City is an 1hr 15 min from Philadelphia, & 15m-1h30m to various Jersey Shore locations.

Education- Draw

Affordability- Niagara Falls, NY

Outdoor Amenities- Niagara Falls vs Jersey Shore in a nutshell

Culture- Neither are cultural powerhouses, and they had both seen their better days in terms of culture. Niagara Falls NY, was the industrial city with a great riverfront & waterfall. Atlantic City the gambling city of the Northeast, with it's Casinos and Saltwater taffy.

But the relocation of manufacturing/industrial jobs to other countries and the growth of casinos in other tri-state areas (Mohegan Sun, Parx, Sands Bethlehem, Casinos in Long Island) have took a toll on these cities. Draw for culture an economy.

I can't really declare a winner, but if I had to live near these cities I'd choose Buffalo, NY or Niagara Falls, Ontario. If I had more money but could still live realatively ckose to these cities than Toronto or Philly.

Toronto isn't that far from Niagara Falls(80-85 miles) and it is in the Buffalo metro. With that said, what about these 2 cities?

Atlantic City is a toilet, but is fun for a Summer weekend getaway from NYC or Philly.

I haven't been to Niagara Falls since I was a kid, but I hear it isn't all that great either (as a city). However, I think Niagara Falls (The falls) is one of those natural wonders that everyone should see sometime in their life.

I'd say Atlantic City for location only, but Niagara as an overall tourist destination. I would only recommend AC for a regional destination for people nearby the NY/NJ/Philly area. Niagara I would recommend to anyone. Then you can at least check out Canada too while you're at it. Toronto isn't that far away.

No offense but Atlantic City is a dump, unfortunately.

I visited once because I always wanted to see it.

Boardwalk itself is nice but the city is not.

And now you can gamble almost anywhere, including Niagara Falls, so no need to go
to Frantic City.

I live only about 40 miles from Niagara Falls, I visit a lot,
mostly on the Canadian side.
I was just there on tuesday, this time on the US side.

US side is run down but not on the scale of Atlantic City.

Trump couldn't even make a go of it in Atlantic City,
that really says something when master of business Trump had to pull out.

I've never been to either city. This is surprising because I've been to Buffalo and have driven through New Jersey dozens of times a piece.

In what way is Atlantic City a dump? Crime-ridden and neglected like Camden, NJ? Depressed and lifeless like Portsmouth, Ohio? Tacky and sleazy like Times Square in the Reagan Era? Dangerous and drugged up like San Francisco's Tenderloin?

Well, Atlantic City is the site of the first ever boardwalk in the US and has the longest boardwalk in the world. The country and world can thank NJ for boardwalks and beach boardwalk culture. Also, places in the game Monopoly are real-life places in AC. Also, Miss America pageant. You're also right about its contribution of saltwater taffy.

Otherwise I agree with your assessment.

I won't cast a declaration here, but when I Google street viewed both cities, Atlantic City struck me as more of a dump. Not sure why, but it did. At least Niagara Falls, NY is next door to the Ontario one, and of course also pretty close to Buffalo. And that Atlantic City isn't as close to a major city(Philly), and that it takes longer to get there. I of course wouldn't be against visiting either city(yes even Atlantic City), if I ever was near there. Like others said, the fact casinos are (almost, including Pennsylvania) everywhere in the U.S. now, probably takes away the big drawing factor AC used to have for tourism. Niagara Falls doesn't have much that jumps out to me, though the American side(not as big vs. the Canada side) of the falls is there, and there is one local casino in Niagara Falls, NY.

As for Atlantic City, has anything filled in any of the buildings where several Atlantic City casinos used to operate in, but closed? I do feel bad for AC residents who used to have casino jobs, but lost them as a result of casino closings.

AC is a sin city where you can have a lot more fun imo. If we are just talking about living in one of the cities, I don't know if I would pick either. However, I would much rather live in Atlantic county over Niagara County. Upstate NY has nice scenery, but I prefer NJ and the better weather.
