Both regions are often take the back seat compared to the cultural hubs in each state. When someone announces they're from Illinois, most people will associate that person with Chicago.. and when someone says they're from California, people will think they've got ties to San Francisco, Los Angeles, or San Diego.
Both areas are a stark contrast to the nearby population centers of their respective states in terms of politics, religiosity, lifestyle, industries, etc.
I can't think of too many differences between them except maybe Hispanic culture is more prevalent in Central California than Southern Illinois.
Would you consider these two regions more or less in the same league culturally?
Southern Illinois also has a substantial to even high Black population in select towns as well. It also gets influenced by the St. Louis area and may have things in common with SE Missouri and western Tennessee.
