I've never seen a comparison between the two. Austin proper is a lot larger. However, both cities are similarly sized metro areas. Which city is better and why? Use all of the normal characteristics, such as:
Economy. Austin.
Traffic. Kansas City.
Nightlife. Austin.
Diversity. Tie.
Crime. Austin but I feel just as safe in KC.
Climate. Depends on what you like.
Geography. Depends on what you like.
Architecture. Kansas City.
Urbanity. Austin.
Sports. Kansas City.
Food. Tie.
Culture. Depends on what you like.
Education. For kids schools? KC.
COL. Kansas City.
Quality Of Life. Kansas City.
Overall. Kansss City.
I'd take KC. In fact there are only 2 or 3 cities in America I would choose below Austin. But that's obviously a minority opinion. Austin is booming, popular, and people like it.
On the criteria:
Economy - Austin
Traffic - KC
Nightlife - I prefer KC. Austin's nightlife is among the most annoying things I've ever experienced.
Diversity - Tie
Crime - Austin
Climate - KC
Geography - Austin
Architecture - KC
Urbanity - KC
Sports - Tie
Food - KC
Culture - KC
Education - Austin
COL - KC
Quality Of Life - Tie
Overall - KC

I would choose Kansas City because it is a nice, urban city under the radar.
KC Wins. It's more urban and has more charm and culture.
