I don't care much for "states" for anything so I'm just going to sum up the Top 5 or 6: 1) California; 2) Texas; 3) Florida; 4) Arizona; 5) Colorado; 6) New York.

Yet another "40 largest" list that excludes places like NC's Triangle area because it's split into two MSAs with Raleigh's being #43 and Durham's being #97.

It's a list that has San Bernardino ahead of Boston and DC! Don't see that every day.

I've looked with interest at the Kauffman Index before. When you understand what it's actually measuring there are fewer surprises. It's about entrepreneurship not wealth. Latinos have a very high rate of small business self-development (perhaps Cubans in Miami help the list make more sense).

This study takes into account the relative sizes of each metro area. I wouldn't be surprised if the Miami metro area ranks number one in new entrepreneur growth relative to the metro area population. Here are some other things you can lol about as your reading through each one. I have many more if you ever need more lols.

I think it's also all the tourists and snowbirds that boost the small businesses tremendously while at the same time not taking up any of the jobs. I also think the snowbirds and international tourists prefer small businesses much more than the average person in the U.S., especially while they're "in town". No other metro area in the U S. has that unique combination of receiving a lot of tourists while at the same time also receiving a lot of snowbirds.
