Port Townsend is a nice historic town on Puget Sound. It also has Fort Wardon, which was the setting for the movie An Officer and a Gentleman. This is about 40(?) miles east of Port Angeles by road.

I don't know the coast well enough to recommend another stopping point before Neah Bay. But there are places to stay along the way. Then at Neah Bay Ocean Shores has a lot of beach-related tourist stuff some of which is open year-round.

Port Townsend look nice from the little I've looked into since I started this thread!

Thanks a bunch

If you're in Washington, I'd suggest staying in Port Townsend or Kalaloch.

Oregon has a better coast though in my opinion. It's more user friendly, cities with some things to do, sandier beaches, slightly warmer. Canon Beach, Seaside, Lincoln City, and Newport are all very nice.
