I'm a massage therapist and esthetician. I'm currently living in Richmond Virginia. I've lived in Virginia all my life so I'm ready to leave. I assumed I wanted to live in Northern Virginia but from what the NOVA forum is telling me they don't have spas in the DMV area.
So my question is where is the best place to be in the service industry? I'm thinking Miami on the east coast, L.A, Las Vegas or Hawaii. I just think it would hard to adjust to culture shock like no season changes.

Another fun fact is that I have tons of time to figure this out due to my daughter not wanting to leave so I have another 5 years here. So I'm researching and saving. Any suggestions?

I'm not meaning this in any negative way at all, but I want to make sure we are on the same page.

Isn't the average salary of a massage therapist in the range of $40K-$50K? If so, Miami, LA, and Hawaii are all expensive and I wouldn't recommend making a move to those places with that salary.

That being said $40K-$50K can go a long way & work in some places. I think Colombus, OH and Pittsburgh, PA are good options. They're affordable places, with a lot of jobs in that field.

This is true.... estheticians make a few dollars more. I do think that working in Las Vegas would give me more money than working in Richmond. I could be wrong but just doing some research first.

I also reread my first post. I would like to inform everyone I'm not running away from my kid. Just the city. I figured she'd be in college and finding her own life and I'd be lucky to see her on holidays and get phone calls as most parents experience when empty nesting.

Las Vegas is definitely more affordable than the other options, and I guess that it makes sense for a profession of that sort to be popular there. Worth looking into if you're interested!

Maybe I need to travel a little more and send more time in the actual cities not as a tourist. I was in LA around 2013 as a tourist. It was nice but nothing to write home about. But I was only there 1 day so I drove through Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It was like every other city (industrial) except in Beverly Hills which I found pretty but not was not wowed. The architecture wasn't as nice as east coast cities. It felt like a want to be version of Florence Italy with palm trees.
I spent a week in Vegas in 2015 and I liked the strip but a week was enough. Maybe because I'm looking at it as a tourist and not someone who lives there. It maybe doable.
I haven't been to Miami yet or Hawaii. I imagine I would like Hawaii more as I age as it seems more laid back.
The thing is from the Hawaii forum they say it's not like Vegas because people don't ask for deserved wages in the service industry there. That truly sucks!
The beauty industry is a multi billion dollar industry I'm sure someone besides me has some insight. Please advise.

What about New Orleans? People are flying in year around there. It's dangerous as hell but I suppose I'd make a livable wage there. Any thoughts?

New Orleans is actually one of my favorite places. The city itself is filled with history (good & bad), the architecture is amazing, and the whole "voodoo scene" is super interesting (to me at least).

It's like any other city in regards to dangerous areas, there are still PLENTY of decent areas to live. Use common sense, stay away from the bad areas and more than likely you'll be okay.
