Base on: whatever you use when evaluating a city. Be it culture, schools, crime, walkability, amenities, location, weather, traffic, shopping, food, etc. Pretty open
How would you rank these seven cities overall? I'd imagine Memphis would either be at the top or bottom of most people's lists
Greenville SC. best downtown and park, close to mountains but closer to beach than most of the others, good weather, good shopping / restaurants, cost of living. Close to Clemson University.
Huntsville no. 2. Some little mountains in the area, good restaurant/ retail, goodo weather, lot of smart people, reasonable cost of living, less industrial and gritty feeling compared to Knoxville and Nooga.
Columbia at no. 3, mostly because I grew up in SC and have family and friends in area and is the closet one to the beach, and a large lake in the area.
I don't really know about Lexington, or Huntsville, but they're too far from the coast anyway. I would go Columbia, Greenville, Chattanooga. I know Nooga isn't close to the coast either, but I find it a really cool place.

You should visit both areas, both are great cities. Huntsville is building some nice mixed use developments throughout town. The high concentration of engineers and science related jobs adds to Huntsville's progressive character. Lexington is horse country, with beautiful rolling acreage, and a large amount of art and cultural attractions. The city is close to Louisville and Cincinnati, and has an outstanding state university. Traffic in Lexington can be bad at times, however.
Good list, but Columbia definitely does not win in weather.
Weather is all preference, Columbia has the mildest winters which for me = best.
