If ANY poster on this forum was able to specifically articulate just a few things that supported this analogy, that would be a huge achievement. What I"ve seen so far:

"because everyone knows it is"

"because everyone says it is"

"dude, its a whole other level"

"dude, cars honking, people hustling"

Great job guys! Way to make the case!

Does global recognition/popularity even contribute to whether a city is "world class"?
I'm not from SF but yes, it is known. It's definitely more well known than Seattle and really has had recognition for a long time.

My point was DC is larger than Virginia Beach... DC is a large city. Paris is so irrelevant with how large DC is.

What would the population of SF be if it weren’t located by the beach?

What would SF be if it weren’t for Silicon Valley?

What would the population of SF be if it were located in Mexico?

San Francisco is farther away from Silicon Valley than D.C. is to Baltimore. Not even in the metro area. When San Francisco boosters say "yeah, but Silicon Valley", its no less ridiculous than if a D.C. booster said, "yeah but the Ravens and Orioles."

"The beach" in San Francisco is incredibly lame, you wouldn't believe how quiet it is even on hot days. Yes, I suppose there would be even less population without the water though.

You see, I don't have a dog in this fight. I find claims that both D.C. and San Francisco are world class equally hilarious.

Philadelphia is definitely closest to NYC in aesthetic similarity and built environment/building density, but San Francisco is more similar to NYC in human density and economic power/corporate presence. San Francisco is more diverse than Philadelphia, although it has an insignificant black population compared to Philadelphia.

And noone specifically asked for your opinion on either. So why comment when you have no "dog" in this fight.

Both are great citites but obviously based on your posting history, these are the two citites you dislike the most.

Both are very high performing citites with very diverse populations excelling in their own strengths.

The point being, DC is the capital. There’s no point in saying “if DC weren’t the capital....” like people have been saying. just like there’s no point in saying what if Miami wasn’t near the ocean. It is near the ocean. And DC is the capital. It’s a bigger metro, bigger CSA than SF.

And to echo the poster above. Both are great cities. I don’t care about labeling which is world class or more world class as they are both different. Cities can be world class for multiple reasons and I don’t think one criteria makes it more worldly than another. But saying DC is just government buildings, etc is dumb. One of the most largest downtown area in the US, 4th largest CSA, 6th largest MSA. Etc. It has a lot to offer. As does SF

LOL and I hate to break it to you but this entire decade, San Francisco has topped the entire country in tech job growth and tech investment.

The SF Metro Area is home to Facebook, Oracle, Salesforce, Twitter, Uber, Lyft, Airbnb, Pinterest, Yelp, Wikipedia, Craigslist, Reddit, etc.

Please stop embarrassing yourself.

As the capital, DC is the more prominent city globally. If you turn on the BBC or read a German newspaper you are more likely to read about news coming out of DC than SF. But, in my experience SF is the more globally renowned city. The food, the shopping, the bay, the scenery, the culture, etc.

It is sort of like comparing Brussels and Barcelona. Brussels is more important, but Barcelona is more attractive to tourists.
