This is Black/African American Education Percentage by MSA for all MSAs of at least 1 million people (2016 estimates). This is measuring the percentage of people aged 25+ who have a bachelor's degree or higher who happen to be Black/African American. If there's an MSA left out of here that you want to know about, let me know.

I wish FactFinder could do it over a period of years, as I noticed when looking at other metros not on this list, that the percentages and total numbers can vary quite a bit from one year to the next.

Some other areas may or may not surprise people, if you get a chance to look at the information.

In terms of percentage from 2010-2016, Grand Rapids went from 12.5% to 20.32%. That is quite a jump for an area that may not be known for being on the radar for degreed Black folks.

The amount in general is very low though to not be very impressive IMO. It should be a red flag going up less than 3500 people and raising the percentage that much. The top 10 are much more impressive.

Great post!

This data shows what is already known among Black folks in the 2010s: Atlanta, DC, Houston, and North Carolina are red hot. All four have tons of jobs and are attracting upwardly mobile Black folks in droves.

San Jose is an outlier here, but a positive one. While there are only 50,000 Black folks in the San Jose area, educational attainment is quite high. This speaks positively of California's post-secondary system.

This comes down to a matter of scale, as there aren’t going to be as many Black people in the Grand Rapids MSA in comparison to those cities.

As well as certain sectors of its economy.

Yeah, but other ones hot too. Chicago is most surprising to me still considering the Black/African American population has been decreasing for years but the amount increased for this is still top 10 and higher than LAs increase. I think most of the rest in top 10 are to be expected.
