I find the 7 to 31 claim to be highly suspect because Seattle had 7 F500 HQs in 2010 so he's saying zero out of town F500s had any presence in Seattle 7 years ago??? Yeah right
Yeah that doesn't sound quite right; I'm pretty sure Seattle had more than 7 F500 companies that had hubs or significant operations there in 2010.
And that's just F500 headquarters. When you expand that to include other significant operations, the number would definitely be higher but it's somewhat hard to quantify that, even if you're specifically talking about research and engineering hubs as the article cited in the original post does with respect to Seattle.

Nor is Wal-Mart. It's not in a large metro and it may not be your cup of tea, but stagnant it is not.
We’ll probably never have a common standard for what counts as a significant operation nor will it be easy to find whether or not a company has met that standard for each and every metro area. It’s probably easier to reduce this down to how many Fortune 500 hqs were in a metropolitan area in 2010 and then how many there are in 2017.

I tend to agree.
