All of the MSAs between 1 million people and 1.6 million except for Hartford, CT didn't even have data.

It’s still extremely impressive either way that you look at it. Providence MSA has more Portuguese than all the other 9 combined. Which include many of the top MSAs in the country like NYC, LA, Boston, Philly, DC, SF, and Miami. Providence is only 35th.

I think the Washington DC area has cemented itself after LA and NY in this country in terms of being international. The diversity is glaring.

Bosnia and Herzegovina
1. St. Louis: 10,817 people
2. Chicago: 7347
3. New York: 3897
4. Atlanta: 3537
5. Detroit: 2826
6. Minneapolis: 2823
7. Dallas: 2771
8. Tampa: 2765
9. Phoenix: 2680
10. San Francisco: 2093

I know the OP only included MSAs of 1M+, but Boise Idaho has a sizable Bosnian population. A local shop owner one time estimated the population in the 3-5k range in the greater Boise area. I couldn't find exact stats, but I know one of the local Islamic centers has over 200 families who are members. I saw a stat that said about 450ish Bosnian families were settled here as refugees between 1994-2004. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we were top 5, and we are most certainly top 10.

Boise doesn't have data for the 1 year ACS, but they do have data for the 5 year ACS. It says there's 1147 Bosnians in the area, which would rank them around 20th. Remember, this is people born in Bosnia - people who are first or second generation born elsewhere aren't counted. I don't know much about the Bosnian population of Boise, but it's possible the larger population you mention includes everyone. I grew up in a place with a few hundred Bosnian refugees from the early 90s - I know that there were a number of them who had kids in America. Regardless, even over 1100 is pretty good for a metro area of under 700K people.

Speaking of which - Rochester, Minnesota metro area would rank 9th in Somalian born population with 1791 at least in the 5 year ACS which is more than Houston and Portland. Not bad for an area with only 210,000 people.

Yeah, makes sense too considering it's the nation's capital. Just looking at the numbers for total - I'd say that first tier is pretty much NYC and then after that is LA and DC. Considering NYC has by far the most "#1 populations", I'd put it in a class of its own and LA and DC after that. After DC and LA is Chicago and Boston area followed by Houston, Miami, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. After that - Dallas and it drops off pretty quickly.

Massachusetts is pretty known for having a large (relatively) Portuguese population. Providence has parts of MA in its MSA. Though maybe I just know that because a good friend of mine in Chicago is original from Portugal and told me

Miami seems like a clear #3. In 2010 it had the highest percentage...about 39% vs. the DC area's 22%. Subtract Cubans and it's still a higher percentage.

Maybe - really one thing this shows is a variety - at least somewhat. I mean I think it's pretty clear what the top 7, 8, or 10 areas in the country are for this. I want to do a similar list but with Ancestry - I don't think it has *all* of the countries here, but it would still be interesting.

I think some of the decently sized, but smaller metros (3 or 4 million people) like Seattle and Minneapolis fared very well considering everything.
