If true, that would be weird. Huntsville is the best-performing city in the state and just has a different dynamic going on than Birmingham. Now had you said Nashville, that would sound more believable.

I wasn't saying that was the case; I was just saying that it would be more believable that Huntsville is "obsessed" with Nashville as opposed to Birmingham.
I think people outside of AL expect there to be a rivalry but from my experience Huntsville looks to and acknowledges Birmingham the top dog of the state, point blank. I don’t even think Huntsvilleians realize that outsiders hold the city in such high regards, particularly as it relates to Birmingham.
It’s reasonable for someone on C-D with an unusually robust understanding of stats to see Huntsville this way, but I seriously doubt you’d find anyone from Birmingham who even considers Huntsville stiff competition. If anything they’d probably think it’s vastly overrated by C-D standards.
Many Huntsville residents take advantage of Nashville's and Birmingham's big city amenities and much cheaper airfares, but there is no obsession with the larger regional cities. The area has its own unique economic structure with federal contractors and high tech industries, and in many ways has more in common with somewhere like Colorado Springs than other comparably sized (or larger) Southeast cities.

Nashville is more of a day trip city to Huntsville than Birmingham is. It’s larger with quite a bit more going on so it’s quite popular in this regard, but I don’t think there’s any perceived competition.

Well obsession doesn't necessarily have to mean competition, but from the little I know about the place, it would just seem weird if Huntsville is "obsessed" with any particular city since it's doing well for itself and seems to be secure in what it is.
