DC is the nations capital and one of the most recognizable cities in the entire world. Easy answer for me.

Tourist Destinaion - DC (nations capital, great museums), Philly (also great museums, solid downtown area and other nice urban neighborhoods, the architecture is excellent, especially colonial)
Culture - Philly, DC
People - tied
Quality of Living - Philly, DC
Suburbs - Philly, DC

I would rather live in suburban Philly than in suburban DC. I would rather live in urban DC than urban Philly, although not by much.

It is funny how quickly places can change. I briefly lived in suburban MD in the very early 2000s, towards the end of the 90s and DC was known as the murder capital of the USA. It was even more notorious than Philadelphia.

The cycle which DC has shifted was rapid and now DC is more highly recognized and regarded, many Washingtonians think they are actually on par with NYC. (which is laughable). BUT I am glad DC is highly recognized and has rebounded. I mean IT IS our nation's capital city.

I think MANY will be shocked to know that Washington, DC actually has a higher crime rate than Philadelphia. Still today.

I like DC, I also went to college there. It is a fantastic place. Philadelphia's biggest challenge has been to shred its old reputation from the 80s/90s. It is happening slowly but surely

Well, I don't think the IDEA of DC gets a ton of respect these days. Outside of the Beltway, animosity towards the federal government is at record levels (which is true across the political spectrum for different reasons). As someone who's spent a good chuck of their life in that area, the social atmosphere has a well-earned reputation for being insufferably political, arrogant and unashamedly self-serving. There are of course plenty of exceptions, but outside of perhaps NYC, I can't think of a more "dog-eat-dog" city than DC.

That being said, the CITY of DC is fantastic and is easily among the most prestigious in the world. Its reputation for being a top job market and cultural center, and possessing a high standard-of-living, is excellent, especially among the white-collar/professional class.

As the capital, it's really an apples-to-orange comparison to any other city, even a former US capital city. Like DC, Philly's reputation as a city has improved greatly, and I'd argue it's actually a much more conventionally exciting/creative city than DC. Nevertheless, outside out of NYC, I don't think any other American city can compete with DC's prestige/reputation on a global scale.

To answer your question, I think D.C. tends to have more of a highly respected, world-class status than Philly, and probably draws more tourists overall. Baltimore slays both of them, though, even if it has the worst reputation of the bunch haha!

LOL. I would put Baltimore on Par with Camden NJ. And that is not a compliment for either city. LOL
