That is a specific area that is adjacent to or within a sort drive of the Niagara River. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Ni...gEwC3oFCAAQigE (602 square miles for the region that is essentially 2 former counties: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Region...ity_of_Niagara )

Hamilton is a separate area, which isn't a part of the Niagara Region mentioned in the thread. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Region...80%93Wentworth (before amalgamation and is just the current version of Hamilton)

Most places west of St Catherine's are closer to Hamilton than Buffalo. Places like Lincoln, West Lincoln, Grimsby and Wainfleet.

Downtown: probably Louisville, but Buffalo is coming on strong
Transit: Buffalo, the only of these 3 that has rail rapid transit
Food: Louisville (Southern/KY cuisine)
Economy: not sure, perhaps Louisville because it is not considered Rustbelt
History: I don't know what to make of this category
Outdoor Rec (45 mile radius): Buffalo because of the lake and nearby Niagara Falls
Arts: (fine and performing): Buffalo
Identity: ????
Outer neighborhoods (for Buffalo and Hartford can include inner suburbs):

Overall, I go with Buffalo in a walk. It's larger, more diverse and stronger with the arts/performing arts. It also has some great dense/lively/old-character/walkable in-city neighborhoods like Allentown and Elmwood Village, as well as new, exciting, growing Canalside downtown on the waterfront.

Ok, but if they are in the Niagara Region, why separate them? That is just a function of the 2 former counties that make up the region.

Also, it is the Buffalo-Niagara Falls metro area. So, those areas west of St. Catherine’s are still minutes from the border.

As an actual resident of the Buffalo area, I can assure you the Niagara province is very connected to the Buffalo area. There is still an incredible number of shoppers that come to shop from Ontario (just look at license plates at the Fashion Outlets). However, there are not many commuters between the US and Canada, although there are certainly some that do so. Most people around here visit Ontario over any other state in the US.

Yes I know, downtown Buffalo is usually 20% Canadian plates, its crazy, but the western end of the Niagara Region is 45 miles from Buffalo, so I really don't think the entire region is Buffalo Centric.

That portion may not be or solely be “Buffalo centric”, but it is still a part of an area that by and large generally influenced by the Buffalo area in many ways.

That region is actually smaller than Erie County in land size and is essentially the size of many typical US counties. So, it isn’t like the western portion of that region is far removed from the Buffalo area. If it was added to the Buffalo area, it would still be smaller in land size than most American metro areas with the same or even a lower populations.

If Hartford annexed just West Hartford it would change everything. Because Hartford covers such a small area and because a large percentage of its property is tax exempt state and corporate property, it finds itself in constant financial strife. Add taxpayers in upper middle class West Hartford and problem solved.

But.......I don't see it ever happening. In CT the suburbs wag the dog.

But there’s much more to Louisville than “annexed suburbs “ If you haven’t been here in the last year and driven or biked 75% of the urban streets you simply cannot understand the urban renaissance in Louisville.
