Whether its the Appalachians, Kentucky coal hills, Ozarks, or Arbuckles, all of these "Midwestern" cities have a border with hilly, forested areas which appear, at least from Google Earth, like they would be pretty scenic and host a lot of things to do outside.
From your experience, how would you rate the 2 hour driving radius around these cities (at least the ones you've been to) in terms of scenic countryside, scenery up close (hiking views), public land, and outdoor activities available? How much do people in these cities use these assets?
How do the forests and landscapes and topography change as you go from southwest to northeast?

I don’t know about the others but the better outdoor areas of the Ozarks are closer to Saint Louis than KC. 2 hours doesn’t get you too much in KC. Bump it up to 4 and a lot more doors open.

That's how it appears. It looks like theirs quite a few reservoirs within 2 hours, but outside of that, it's mostly farmland. And with 4 hours, it looks like that specifically means 4 hours in the south east direction only?

Not necessarily. 3 hours directly south puts you in NW Arkansas with tons of outdoor stuff like Devil’s Den State Park. Also, I really like Weston Bend State Park and that’s 40 minutes NW of dt KC. The Elk River Trail is about 2.5 hours from KC in SW Kansas and that’s a really cool area. But overall, yes a lot more to the southeast.
