I haven't taken a vacation or been out of the DC area for 7 years now and I finally have the opportunity to in a few weeks
I've thought about taking a solo trip for a week to either Toronto, NYC or somewhere in New England to get my head clear and for a change of setting too.
Toronto- cool city, been on my bucket list for years. Just never been to and I could make a stop or two in Montreal or Niagara falls.
NYC- Closest to me but I haven't been in 10 years. Cool city too.
Small new england town- Could be the best in taking my mind off some things and I've also never been out there either.
Those are all good choices, I feel for you! If I wanted to take my mind off of things and think I’d go to Vermont or something quiet. If I wanted to take my mind off of things by being distracted and on the run NYC. Toronto would be cool tho. My vote is NY
NYC...
And if you want to get away and get to a quiet space, you can always drive either up the 684 or West across the Hudson/Tappan Zee to get to some quiet, hillside areas.
It would be NYC by a country mile if you’ve never been, but you’ve been there in the last decade. While I haven’t been in ages, I’d pick Toronto if I were you. It’s probably my favorite city in the Great Lake region, even over Chicago. Niagara Falls is awesome, and I’ve heard Montreal is great for a feel of Europe in North America. No offense, but New England, or those saying head to upstate NY, is not my idea of a vacation after waiting seven years. Those are three day weekend trips, you need a real vacation after waiting this long.
Toronto...different country gives TO the win for something new. NE small town would come in second for the change of pace vibe. NYC is an amazingly easy trip to make from DC. If you haven't been in 10 years, it kinda implies that you are not that interested. The rare poll where I would rank NYC last (just for your situation).

Lol, yeah. I didn't think it was that long till I thought about it last week.
I never really looked at it that way when it came to the Vermont and NYC suggestions.
How about taking a vacation to a "New England" like community like Lewiston NY or Niagara on the Lake ON both near Niagara Falls, then taking a drive up to Toronto?
I live in the DC Area so just a note about distances. Washington DC to Toronto is a 9 hour drive. Toronto is as far from DC as Atlanta (definitely a case of looks can be deceiving since both are in the Northeast).
New York from Washington is a 4.5 hour drive (half the distance).
I think a good trip would be:
A. New York for a few days
NOTE: I usually take "action packed" daytrips leaving via Megabus from Union Station at like 6am and getting back to DC at like 1am. But I think 3 days is needed to 'settle in' a bit).
B. Nature Drive. Two Options
HUDSON RIVER TRIP
(1) Hudson River Valley (there's lots of small quaint, boutique towns like New Paltz, Hudson, Woodstock, Beacon, Saugerties that are great for leisure walking and contemporary art)
(2) United States Military Academy at West Point pit stop (it's on the Hudson River but looks like a giant fortress. Definitely a cool visit while there)
(3) Catskill Mountains
(4) Albany (see the beautiful New York State Capitol!)
(5) Adirondack Mountains for a few days
SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND
(1) New Haven (Yale University, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library (for the Voynich Manuscript)
(2) New London, Mystic and Essex (beautiful, relaxed, small New England port towns)
(3) Newport (for the Cliff Walk and the Breakers)
(4) Cape Cod National Seashore (you can drive all the way up to Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod and come back)
---
Both of the trips above are the same distance as Toronto, but you get to pack a lot more in terms of scenery, sights, and sounds. So I would definitely see it as a Toronto OR New York/New England trip.
