Biggest strengths in comparison to other attributes we usually judge cities by, I mean.

Portland wins for waitstaff adorned with nose piercings and dreadlocks.

I imagine the seafood is top notch as well.

It depends on your background, where you are from, and what you prefer. There is no right or wrong answer. Apples and oranges.

For me? Boston.

As far as raw numbers, Boston is going to offer a far more substantial food scene within the same/smaller radius. They both rank among the World leaders as far as ethnic diversity when it comes to food, which is actually very surprising. For Boston, it's really tough to beat the North End, South End, Back Bay, Allston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline.. Portland punches above it's weight, but it's not Boston. In fact, I think Cambridge vs. Portland would be a farrrr better vs. comparison.

As far as breweries go, I'd take Greater Boston in a landslide. So strong with the local options.. Far less of that mass produced, stagnant west coast nonsense all over the PNW (with the exeption of Sam Adams and Harpoon which stinks). Tree House, Trillium, Mystic, Night Shift, Lamp Lighter, Aeronaut, Lord Hobo, Idle Hands, Jack's Abby, Springdale, Exhibit A, Backlash, Notch, Bantam, Mighty Squirrel all within 15-20 miles.. The Northeast, largely thanks to Vermont, has changed the beer ecosystem in so many ways over the last decade.

Unbelievable that Tree House Brewery in Charlton, Ma has 7 beers in the top 25!
