A sibling lives in Virginia Beach and it is more expensive than places in the Interior Northeast as well.

This is why looking at cost living is a metro area thing versus being a state thing. You just get hit in different ways in relation to pay, most of the time.

People get used to it over time. When I was in Harrisonburg they talked about how expensive Northern Virginia is. But Harrisonburg isn't cheap compared to other places. If you're from Virginia you probably don't notice it as much. A lot of people never leave an area, so they just assume it is like that everywhere.

Hmmmm... One of the biggest draws to retirees is FL's *inexpensiveness*!

In comparison to the Northeast yes. The rest of the country not so much.

Not really. Loudoun is crazy right now. My friend and his wife bought a TH in Ashburn, got into a bidding war on every home they put a contract on (4 of them) on the 5th one they finally got it but ended up having to pay $20,000 over the asking price.

Even the areas kind of far out are getting more expensive and when you do finally find something, you then end up in multiple bidding wars. It's frustrating.

As far as Florida, yikes. I've never really been impressed, nice place to visit but I would never want to live there.

I don't know of any large areas of Florida as expensive as the Tri-state area or the Boston metro area. Sure, Miami has some expensive real-estate but it does have inexpensive real estate to be found relatively close by to balance it out. The rest of Florida is even cheaper with one notable exception - the Keys. But the Keys I don't take seriously as an area.....

Yeah, I’ve always found FL to be reasonably priced. But idk what the salaries there are like but it’s not very expensive at least in comparison to the NE.

The thing that a lot of people don't seem to get is that the salaries all depend on the type of job you have. If you work for any type of federal government agency for example (of which there are LOTS of places), you're paid on their scale. Their GS scale adjusts depending on what part of the country you live in, sure, but a quick glance at their salary sheets shows me that a GS13 makes around $20k less in Melbourne, FL, than in San Francisco... $100,000 will take care of you pretty well in Central Florida. $120k in San Francisco, not so much.
