What makes this so interesting is that Canadian cities have much the same style of development outside the urban cores that American cities have. Yet they invest in public (and especially rail) transportation there.

As do the rest of the world's developed nations. The US is far behind in this regard, and I think this will eventually bite us in the ass, if it's not already.

The difference can be huge. Seattle and Vancouver are compared a lot but have had a totally different approach to transit, as the Seattle Times article shows.
Canada by a good margin. Look at the size of the metropolitan areas in Canada and then do a comparison versus similarly sized metropolitan regions in the US and it will mostly be in Canada's favor.
