The foot traffic at night in Midtown, Edgewood, Va Hi, West Midtown, L5P, EAV, etc, etc is the same as those places. They might have more walkable places but the late night vibe isn't there. In DC, its mostly a work culture city. Most people have gov jobs so they don't want to stay out late because most people there are very career driven. SF and nightlife shouldn't even be put in the same sentence. Tampa, New Orleans, Austin, are smaller than SF but have better nightlife. Plus people can still smoke cigarettes in most places in the south the strip clubs are fully nude in Tampa, Miami, Atlanta, etc. The last call is later. People come to those cities to party. People don't go to SF or Seattle to party. Maybe the people from small towns around those cities but people just go to Vegas on the West Coast to party. On the East people go to NYC, Miami, ATL, New Orleans, etc to party. BTW a city can be the most walkable city ever but if it shuts down at 1:30 then it isn't really high energy. Most Southern/East Coast cities that aren't as walkable still have more energy than West Coast walkable cities

SF doesn't have a real party culture. California wise LA is the party city of California. SF has nightlife districts but the vibe is just different. Even LA isn't all that because most people there go to Vegas to do real partying

There are plenty of pedestrians out and about in various neighborhoods here. You're making it sound like there are zero, and everything is in a strip mall or a stand alone business. This is simply not true, as most people that actually know the place can confirm.

Sure.... anyone that's been to the three can obviously see the difference in foot traffic on peachtree or little five points vs places like the mission or U st. I'll leave it that since it's pretty obvious

I’d have to agree. LA has pockets that are like the east coast, but the culture in general is like the rest of the west. But I’m old so that may have changed in the last 10 years.

Still I don’t see that any of this has to do with energy level. I don’t think that going to a club at midnight and coming home at 4am takes more energy than waking up at 6am on a Saturday morning to go for a day hike.

Later last call. Stay open later make people stay out later which gives it more energy. For example in LA/SF the last call is 1:30 so people have to be at the bar around 11/11:30pm so they can be out by 1:30. On the average east coast city people don't get to the bar until 12:30/1am because the bar isn't closing until 3am or 4am.

Full nudity strip clubs: Several cities in the south allow drink sales and full nudity. On the West Coast they have to be covered up. Having full nudity makes more people want to go to strip clubs which gives people more options which also gives said city more energy

Smoking is still allowed: This brings more people out because some people still like going to the bar with a cigarette and to drink a beer. Cant do that in most West Coast cities.

Drinks are cheaper. Cheaper drinks = more drunks = more fun

South has more people: South has more people than in the West. More people equals to more people staying out at night

South is big in sports. College football and sports in general. Sports always turn into a party either with tailgating/after parties, etc. Didn't really get a big sports vibe in California.

etc etc etc

I just think the West Coast is more of a chill vibe vs a wild southern vibe. You can still get wild in LA but the overall vibe is more of chilling in the nice weather, smoking no a lil something something, etc vs being wild and drunk.

Cant really describe it any better than this. If someone has to explain to someone how a bar is high energy than that might be the answer to your question there

If this is your criteria then yes Atlanta beats DC and SF

Its more than foot traffic. Its the vibe and energy. You are nitpicking about foot traffic on random streets on a topic of energy level when foot traffic vs vibe of a city vs culture of a city vs energy are totally different things. A bar for example is the same everywhere. Its a building with alcohol and people inside but the location and vibe of the city is what makes the energy of a bar different. If someone have to explain this to you think you are proving the thread starter point

Peachtree isn't even a contender, but Little 5 and various other neighborhoods are.

As usual, you are being dishonest and your bias is showing. You really have zero credibility when it comes to anything related to Atlanta.

S.F. tries to close by 6 or 7 PM. You would be lucky if stores stay open past 8 PM or a restaurant closes at 10 PM instead of 9 PM.

S.F. is just weird. Maybe it's the safety level in the city itself at dusk or the people who could afford to live there tend to be "mature" than most other U.S. cities/metros?

West Coasters tend to be self-conscious about their image. Smoking plain ol' tobacco is not as edgy as smoking pot these days (and tobacco is socially ostracized in general these days). More expensive cocktails are preferred than plain beer or wine. The puritanical ideals of the early settlers and inertia has kept the last call times the same for a century.

With the ubiquity of smartphones, cognizant of the high-tech industry is on the West Coast, nobody wants to be photographed at a full nude strip club and the photo gets posted all over social media (Facebook/Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.) and ruining their reputation.
