There are just so many parallels, imo it just seems like Columbia is better in every comparison. I do wish Columbia leveraged the river more with a riverboat but understand this would be impossible due to the rocks and lower water levels.
Columbia -Augusta
Lake Murray-Lake Thurmond
Congaree Swamp - Phinzy Swamp
Congaree River - Savannah River
UofSC - Augusta University
Cola 1.5hr to CLT - Augusta 2hr to Atl
Vista & Main - Broad Street
Did I miss any?
Fort Jackson - Fort Gordon
Riverfront Park - Augusta Riverwalk
Columbia is just a mediocre city. It has a slight edge over Augusta but nothing to write home about.
This may be true when compared to a much larger metro that offers more but some of us appreciate a smaller metro with less going on. Unless you know of a similar sized city that's less mediocre.

When is the last time you’ve been to Augusta? Did you just come for the Masters?
I can think of several large projects under construction downtown, or finished Nov/Dec.
State of Georgia building a $100 million cyber institute on the river downtown. Phase 1 open.
The state expanded our Riverwalk.
$40 million University ER expansion
$60 million AU cancer center expansion
Hyatt House Hotel
South African developers turning two old mills into mixed use development(1 million square feet over 150 million)
$30 million apt building
Pedestrian bridge over Reynolds
I’m certain anybody selling Augusta short is not familiar with the ongoing progress.

They are very comparable considering all of the parallels mentioned on this post. I think Columbia better positioned for success. The more Augusta gets discovered and realized, the more the gap will narrow.
I have to give this one to Columbia and by a stretch. I just don't get a Mid City feel when I'm in Augusta for some reason, just feels a Tier below Columbia. Columbia has more of a City feel and feels much larger than Augusta IMO, especially from the Freeway level and Downtown...Not taking anything away from Augusta but they just aren't in the same league to me, never viewed them that way.

Augusta s booming and certainly closing the gap. Going with Cyber was the smartest move in recent history as Augusta is now known for more than the Masters.
Does Columbia have an answer for Hammond's Ferry in North Augusta? I feel like it has to but I wouldn't know what it is.
Saluda River Club in Lexington comes to mind.. the homes in Congaree Park in W. Cola maybe or Lake Carolina Blvd
