Hi everyone - my husband and I are thinking of moving out of the northeast (we’re both native New Yorkers and have been living in nyc for 15+ years). We are over the long, cold winters and the stress of living in NY. We like to be near the ocean, but don’t mind driving to it, and are mostly concerned with jobs, climate, and medical care. My husband is in tech and I am in the wellness field. I love palm trees and beaches, but don’t do well in extreme heat and humidity. We have close family in and near Raleigh, and great friends near Tampa. We do not have children, just a dog. I am a cancer survivor. We are in our early 40s. Any suggestions for us? TiA!

All I can say is that you're very unlikely to enjoy Tampa for a good half of the year if extreme heat/humidity bother you. It gets hot and extremely humid.

I like both Tampa and Raleigh. But if you don't do well with humidity, you wouldn't like Tampa. Raleigh's climate is more moderate, 2 hours to the beach, and has some of the best healthcare in the nation. A big congrats on winning your fight with cancer. Praying you continue to do well!

Why haven't you considered southern California? If you have managed to afford NYC, I would expect it to be in your budget. It seems to be more of what you are looking for.

We have! Way more expensive than NYC, taxes and gas higher than NY, air quality compromised with fires and such. We do love the west coast, but it is also far from family and friends. Maybe if we were younger, we’d bite the bullet. Or maybe when/if cost of living goes down. Great recommendation, however!

Both urban areas offer what you are looking for. It seems to come down to either living among your family or living among great friends?

The Raleigh area is exceptional in terms of job opportunities in technology as well as medical facilities. While it is quite a bit cooler climatically than Tampa most of the year, beaches (even with palm trees) are only a few hours drive south around Wilmington and Myrtle Beach.

You're correct about the cost of living. When you adjust cost of living with annual incomes, NYC is 206.11 (ie 206.11% above the national average), SD 222.70, LA is 261.28, and SF is 432.49. Once any area's Purchasing Power goes beyond 33% of the national average, it's economically impossible for an area to become "affordable" again. NYC and the CA metros are light years beyond that threshold. Too, your wildfire and smog concerns are legit too. No matter where you end up, good luck in your search.

I don't like heat and humidity either. Florida is my own personal idea of hell. I would pick Raleigh (although I assume you will still have heat/humidity, just not like FL) Coastal CA would be my top choice if I wanted to get away from the cold AND the heat/humidity AND be close to the beach, but yes, COL is an issue for most.
