But, the way the question is phrased, Toronto is the best in Canada nationalistically, so they win.

I’d rank them:

New York
Toronto
San Francisco
Chicago
Washington
Los Angeles

Agreed that Boston belongs in the mix. Maybe Seattle, Montreal, Minneapolis, or San Diego as well.

Anyway, my vote is:

NYC >>> Toronto > Chicago > LA >> DC

I'm biased with Chicago and could see an argument for putting LA in front of it. But DC is a pretty distant last in my mind.
How is SF not like the others? It’s one of the densest, biggest, most important cities and metro areas in the country.

But back this thread.

US News & World Report evaluated the 125 largest Metro Areas looking at all sorts of factors:

The Top 20 MSAs
1. Austin, Texas
2. Denver, Colorado
3. Colorado Springs, Colorado
4. Fayetteville, Arkansas
5. Des Moines, Iowa
6. Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota
7. San Francisco, California
8. Portland, Oregon
9. Seattle, Washington
10. Raleigh & Durham, North Carolina
11. Huntsville, Alabama
12. Madison, Wisconsin
13. Grand Rapids, Michigan
14. San Jose, California
15. Nashville, Tennessee
16. Asheville, North Carolina
17. Boise, Idaho
18. Sarasota, Florida
19. Washington, D.C.
20. Charlotte, North Carolina

https://realestate.usnews.com/places...ive?src=usn_pr

SF and DC both made the top 20. NY, LA and Chicago all scored near the bottom, but that's not my point.

This is. The desirability component of the ranking...

Desirability Rating/Metro Area/#Overall Rank
10.0 San Francisco#7
9.6 San Diego#36
9.1 Seattle#9
9.0 New York#90
8.8 Denver#2
8.7 Los Angeles#107
8.2 Phoenix#26
7.1 Washington DC#19
6.9 Dallas#21
6.9 Miami#113
6.8 Atlanta#57
6.8 Chicago#104
6.7 Boston#27
6.6 Tampa#56
6.5 Houston#30
6.5 Minneapolis#6
6.2 Philadelphia#102
6.1 Cleveland#85
6.0 Baltimore#100
5.9 St Louis#81
5.3 Detroit#93

SF also had a higher desirability rating than the city ranked 1st in the overall ranking.

9.0 Austin#1

So apparently plenty of folks still find this poop laden sanctuary cesspool very desirable

lol
I agree with the other poster that many don't understand the sheer wealth of San Francisco, and that this wealth winch has grown tremendously in the last 20 years is what's driving most of the problems these days. I don't know I still enjoy every visit to SF was there recently tons of new development everywhere the Salesforce looks beautiful especially from the bay bridge. The wealth there is freaking insane, and hard to wrap ones head around and growing by leaps and bounds year over year. I used to always associate the wealthiest metro as DC big gap then the rest, but SF has surpassed and will continue to widen the gap HQ2 is a little too little too late to really have a large impact.

Toronto without question. The lack of crime compared to those US cities alone is reason enough.

The crime rate in Toronto in recent years has been about the same as that of NYC.
