Along with the Bay Area, those are the most impressive. Given Chicago’s population decline I think it’s impressive as well.

Austin only has 1 F500 headquarters. There is corporate presence in Austin as numerous big companies have pretty large offices there. Also the city itself has just under 1 million people. It is the MSA that has 2+ million
Austin gets a lot of tech hype but it's not a major tech HQ city at all.

Seattle doesn't have a ton of companies on these lists. However we had three of the top 26 in Microsoft, Costco, and Amazon, with revenues of $110, $142, and $232 billion.

LA...amazing...its top company was #53...Disney at $59 billion.

San Diego, Denver, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Portland were all pretty light. Salt Lake City and Sacramento...zero in the 500.

Boise kicked ass...#52 and 105 in Albertson's and Micron.

Austin's Dell ranked #34.

Kansas City peaked at #455.

Dallas kicked ass with three of the top nine.

Houston and Atlanta had a lot of companies on the list but topped out at #23 and #27 respectively.

30 years ago LA had more of a presence with oil companies and aerospace, but those have all moved or been bought out. LA hasn't been seen as a good place for business in a generation. The perception is slowly changing, but the reality is that it's still a bad place for business. Our local government is pretty hostile to any jobs that aren't union or government jobs.

To judge a place by its population trends, without looking deeper at the story behind the trend, is fairly naive. Chicago has been #2 in this (pure MSA wise, not CSA) for a long time and the population trend has had absolutely no negative impact on companies. In reality, there were Fortune 500 companies that had moved their HQ to Chicago in the last few years including ConAgra, Caterpillar, and ADM. There's also organizations which had moved - GE Healthcare which does $19B a year moved its HQ from England to Chicago a year or two ago. If it was its own company, it would be in the top 175 in Fortune 500.

Of the top 5 largest MSAs in the country, these are the Bachlor's degree and higher attainment percentages:
NYC MSA: 38.7%
Chicago MSA: 36.7%
Dallas MSA: 33.7%
Los Angeles MSA: 33.1%
Houston MSA: 31.9%

Chicago is not losing its place in this ranking MSA wise anytime soon. The only area that truly competes with it is the Bay Area if you put SF and San Jose together (which makes sense). Although Houston and Dallas are juggernauts in their own right in this, I don't think they are going to be 2nd place in the next few years at all.

Agree. It's a good city if you want a job in tech for a corporation but outside of that it's maybe a little overhyped. It pulls its weight well for its size though for sure.

I think it's more like "Inhabitants per Fortune 500 company" - the smaller the better essentially.
