Tough call, but I opted to vote for San Francisco. SF and its culture were well-known to Europeans and Asians before Los Angeles was little more than a mission community.

"It is hardly fair to blame America for the state of San Francisco, for its population is cosmopolitan and its seaport attracts the floating vice of the Pacific; but be the cause what it may, there is much room for spiritual betterment."

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

"It's a mad city, inhabited by perfectly insane people whose women are of remarkable beauty"

Ibid. 1891

"East is East, and West is San Francisco"

O.Henry

"It's an odd thing, but anyone who disappears is said to be seen in San Francisco. It must be a delightful city and possess all the attractions of the next world"

Oscar Wilde

Has 2 more Olympics events than San Fran. and 3rd coming soon.

Mainly known for its beaches, Hollywood, Tourism, music industry history, theme parks. porn industry.
Big award show like Grammys, Oscars, Golden Globes, other major award shows and the Razzys.
TV shows like Brady Bunch, Save by the Bell, Beverly Hills 90210, The Hills, Real Housewives of BH, Melrose Place, Baywatch, and bunch of movies. Jimmy Kimmel, James Corden, Conan O Brien.

I think more people have an idea of what LA is based on media. Everyone wants to see Hollywood Sign, Walk of Fame, Sunset Strip, Malibu, Venice beach, Santa Monica pier, Beverly Hills, Universal Studios, Disneyland (though part of the Metro is kind of far).

SF has some things here and down in Silicon Valley. But Often people think of San Fran, they think of Golden Gate Bridge, Pyramid tower, hilly, alcatraz, gay culture, thats the biggie. Hardly anyone talks about the southbay and east bay or up bay
Universities
Hmmm, Stanford and Cal-Berkeley >more iconic/better known> USC and UCLA. Perhaps if you add Cal Tech.

Sports Teams
This on is close
49ers > Rams
Lakers > Golden State
Dodgers > Giants (but close)
LA Kings and Anaheim (who cares)

For "iconic", I voted La La. If this were which is most "idiotic", it would be a tie.

This is very true, and goes to show just how unbelievable and impressive the growth of los Angeles from a small Pueblo, to the agricultural capital of the world winch laid the groundwork for massive urbanitaion. California's present day agricultural capital of the world central valley, and Napa valley were after thoughs and only cultivated once Los Angeles had little available land they even used the exact same methods winch had been developed in Los Angeles to produce a prospering industry. The Los Angeles area was built on the oil and gas industry of winch fueled the roaring 20s with almost 40% of all oil in the country coming from the Los Angeles area.

Now Los Angeles has thebl third largest metropolitan economy in the entire world larger than Shanghai with 35 million people, Seoul with 25 million people. in all of that in a short 150 year span. Los Angeles doesn't have to be confused with it's neighboring suburbs to gain international recognition. It stands on it's own two feet, and the entire world knows it. It's probably had more of an impact on modern American culture than any other city.

They are both **extremely** iconic in so many ways all over the world, people know a lot about them, and California's profile as a state is lifted because of these 2 cities.

I agree, but the states #1 City definitely has had a more profound impact than the states #4 city even considering the 1850-1900 time period. San Jose was the first capital of California.

LOL San Francisco being number 4 in population in CA is absolutely meaningless when it comes to being "iconic", which is the topic of this thread.

And LAs 'impact' in California basically ends in Bakersfield-anything north of the Kern county line is essentially a Bay Area suburb at this point.
