Philadelphia, with Cleveland as a runner-up. Affordable, diverse, walkable, decent public transit, variety of architecture, good downtowns, anchors of large metro areas.

No survey data, but a mix of population growth data, anecdotes from people that moved to/live there, and common sense as well.

Phoenix is not seen as a vacation getaway? Are you serious? No, not in the sense of a tropical island getaway, but seriously, with the amount of resorts, warm climate, scenery, and nearby national parks, you're going to tell me it's not a getaway destination? I can tell you that personally growing up, it was for my family.

Not that that was even part of the discussion. The whole thread is about cities that are seen as "undesirable" to most people, not if they're not seen as the holy land or anything like that.

True story.

Scottsdale alone has more than 70 hotels and resorts (over 15,000 hotel rooms). In 2016, Scottsdale had the highest number of destination spas per capita than another other U.S. city. Also, Scottsdale was fourth (tied with Atlanta), after New York, Las Vegas, and Chicago as far as having the most AAA-5 Diamond hotels and resorts in the U.S.

Perhaps you were referencing my post about Scottsdale. And, it was a post specifically about the magnitude of Scottsdale itself. Visitors also stay in other places/cities around the valley. There's also Cactus League Baseball Spring Training every year, the Phoenix Open, Bowl games, PF Changs Marathon, many other sporting events, festivals, etc. Sedona and the Grand Canyon are pretty popular for international and out-of-state visitors. According to the Arizona Office of Tourism, visitor activities/experiences while visiting Phoenix are as follows: Shopping, Fine Dining, Swimming, Landmark/Historical Site, Bar/Nightclub, National/State Park, Hiking/Backpacking, Museum, Casino, Golf, Business Meeting, Pro/College Sports, Brewery in that order.

Perhaps Phoenix isn't the most desirable vacation location for everyone you know, but one would be clueless to believe that it doesn't draw any visitors from back east and north. The Designated Market Area origin (US cities) of overnight trips to Phoenix is as follows:

LA
Tucson
Denver
Chicago
New York
San Francisco
ABQ
San Diego
Las Vegas
