IMO all of those skylines are too close to call the clear winner. Which one of those is the most/least impressive to you in person? Please rank them from 1st to 6th. Explain and discuss your rankings and predict which one will be the most impressive looking by 2030.

Again the choices are Denver, Charlotte, Austin, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh and San Diego. Throw in Detroit if you want to.

Denver
Minneapolis
Charlotte
Austin
Pittsburgh, (aesthetically and architecturally pleasing)
San Diego

Denver and Austin will top this list in 2030 and pull away from the rest.

Other than Denver, this list reversed would be the ranking of best downtowns...

Eh, honestly this group of cities all have comparable skylines. I think it's more subjective and comes down to personal preference.

Pittsburgh. In 2030 it will still be Pittsburgh.

I really like Pittsburgh, Minneapolis, Denver, and Charlotte’s skylines in this group. It’s a close call for me, but with the three rivers backdrop, I probably would have to go with Pitt.

I find them all to be pretty meh, although I think Pittsburgh's with the bridges is pretty cool.

To the average person, there are only three criteria that they consider:
  • Cluster of tall buildings with limited *perceived gaps between buildings to make it look dense.
  • 2-3 very tall buildings that stand above the rest to create a heirarchy
  • 2-3 of the tallest buildings have less conventional architecture (not a box)
There are a few exceptions for smaller cities (e.g. Vancouver). Larger skylines like NYC, Hong Kong, Chicago, etc. can get away without this because they have so much density and height. Otherwise these criteria are why people remember Shanghai's skyline over Tokyo, Seoul, or Taipei. Minneapolis over San Diego or DC (sans monuments).

Personally I prefer skylines that look good from all angles, not just the most famous pictures. Pittsburgh is probably the only one that looks cool from all sides. Also, I compare them at ground level, which is an important distinction. Not just some fancy picture from 200ft up.

Minneapolis has the best aesthetics and scale. I voted for it. The others aren't in sequence.

Charlotte has the best tallest building.

San Diego has the best of the residential-heavy flat-top style.

I'm not enthralled by the bow-of-ship view, taking Pittsburgh down a notch.

Denver is ok but too early-80s.

Austin is pretty good but not number one in any way.
