I'm thinking in terms of states that are already at a high level. DC is just a city and we all should know that Alaska is small in terms of the general GDP.

I think Texas because of all the oil and gas.

New York is obviously the most important state in the country in every way with the sole exception of population.

I don't think it will even take that long.

As long as the stock market exists NY will be more important than Texas. Not necessarily better, just more important.

It's close. New York is the financial and media headquarters of America (and in some ways, the entire world), while Texas has good job growth, oil, and could easily become its own country like California. I'd say both are more important in their own ways. If oil eventually isn't as important as it is now in the future, that will be a huge blow to Texas' economy.

Texas has a higher GDP and a larger population, so I think it gets my vote, even though NYC is by far the most important city in the country.

And Texas is growing at a much faster rate, so it should pull away over the coming decades unless something significantly changes growth patterns.

65% of the people who live in New York State reside in New York City. Without New York City, New York State leaves much to be desired. Texas, on the other hand has 4 major cities over 2 million in the metro, 2 of which are mega sized metros,, and all 4 of the metros are vibrant thriving metros that have consistently been among the fastest growing metros in the nation for at least the last 40 to 50 years and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Without NYC, New York State is pretty much another typical Rust Belt state that hit the skids in the last century. To be honest, no Amercan city can compete with NYC in importance. Without NYC, Texas is more important than New York State. NYC has the most Fortune 500 companies in the country, but Dallas and Houston comes in 2nd and 3rd place with the third most Fortune 500 companies.
