I think Boston has plenty of trees in/around the core, and especially so in the the outer neighborhoods. Not just mature tree-lined streets (and there are plenty of those), but the Boston Common, Commonwealth Avenue Mall (and entire Emerald Necklace), along the Charles (which, combined with rowers at the Head of the Charles, is probably Boston's signature Fall image), Greenway, etc. are all very verdant sections within the urban core. That said, I wouldn't rank Boston itself higher than any other Northeastern or Midwestern city like New York, Philly, Chicago, etc. All look wonderful in fall colors.
Boston is consistently mentioned, in my opinion, due to it's being the "hub" of New England and it's affiliation with Northern New England (ME, NH, VT), and the smaller villages and towns throughout MA that really kind of fit the stereotypical "Fall" scenery. There's a reason why all of the mountain roads in Vermont are clogged with MA plates this time of year.
