Which city do you think is better? I currently live in Minneapolis and have only visited Denver once. From reading different threads it seems that both of these cities are looked upon pretty favorably. They seem very similar in size, look, and things to do. I think Minneapolis is a very nice city(minus the weather) and Denver looks very nice as well so I'm interested to see what you guys think if you had to compare the two.
Denver's winters are just as bad as the Twin Cities but in different ways. Denver while it does not get as cold as the Twin Cities gets twice as much snow. So it's a tradeoff I'd say.
Hi, sonic, do you have family in MN, is that where you're from? Funny I seen this post, see also my post above ("Should I stay or should I go? home or CO?") I am also battling the same decision!
I agree with the other poster, the winters are pretty much the same. But so far, I like the summer here better--there's practicaly no humidity! Compared to MN's 'sticky-ness' it's great. I mean, it's hot, of course, but well..it's summer!
Weather: Denver by far: Minneapolis winters arent as cold as alot of would presume, usually 20s with some days in the 40s. But Denver averages the
40s during the days and even has some 60s. Denver has probubly more snow then Minneapolis, but in Denver it melts faster. Summer-time humidity is much lower in Denver, the day-time highs are slightly warmer but its a very dry heat upper 80s on average in Denver as opposed to mid 80s and humid in Minneapolis.
Traffic- Minneapolis has a much better transportation, highway network
Transit- Denver: Minneapolis bus system has a high-frequency network but that limits the rest of the system, Denver has more frequent bus service. Both cities have good transit.
Economy: Both cities have middle-of the road economies that had glory days in the 90s and have cooled off considerable
Education: Minneapolis by a bit. Denver has a Auraria and a few private colleges, Minneapolis has U of M and St. Paul is big on catholic colleges.
People: Both are friendly, Denverites are more outgoing. Minneapolitans are more reserved.
Neighborhood: Tie: Minneapolis and Denver both have several appealing neighborhoods. Minneapolis with Uptown, Loring Park, Dinkytown. Denver with Capitol Hill, Broadway area from 10th to Alameda area and Highland.
Denver is more laid-back, Minneapolis is more up-tight
Recreation: Minneapolis has more water, Denver has the mountains but a distance away
Minneapolis also has a much higher violent crime rate then Denver, mainly because Minneapolis has a large area of run-down neighborhoods while Denver really doesnt have run-down areas.
Downtown: Both cities have very nice well-planned, vibrant downtowns. I would say Minneapolis has a slightly more upscale feel to it (too ritzy for me) and Denver's is more of the western laid-back style of a downtown.
Overall, Denver wins in my opinion but Minneapolis is a good city and could be a great one if it changed mayors and got its violence under control. St. Paul is also a great medium-sized city but seems to be going down-hill a bit because of budget issues hopefully the economic tide will turn for such a gem.
Well actually, only 2 of the seven 4-year colleges in St Paul are Catholic. Of the others, 2 are public, 1 is Lutheran and 2 are private non-denominational.
hey, mattden seemed to really break it down.
My sister lives in Golden. I just got back from Minn/St Paul. I may be oversimplifying it, but you're one of two types...a flatlander or a mountain person. Me? I love mountains. So I could probably NOT deal with Minneapolis!
Besides, in my opinion, that area looks much like what I am used to in NJ. And according to my research, it is almost as expensive.
Denver. You can be somewhere scenic and beautiful relatively fast. I'd step out on a limb and classify Denver as the more hip of the two. Just my .02
Both are nice, really. Minneapolis is quite nice, it really is, same goes for Denver. That would be a tough decision to make. Id probably lean more towards Denver, but not by much, simply due to its proximity to the Rockies.
I've actually never been to either but from what I've gathered, they seem somewhat similar. Both seem to be pretty cool cities. I personally would probably settle on Denver for weather-related reasons. It gets a lot more sun than Minneapolis, and I prefer it's dry heat to the humidity of the Eastern U.S. (and in turn, Minneapolis).
Flying in Denver I was shocked how ugly and bleak looking the area is. No green and few trees. Yes it is nice 50 miles west in the mountains but the area around Denver proper is ugly.
