Boston seems to be the clear favorite. No surprises for this long time resident. It's an amazing city!
I'll have to give Philly a serious look, great poll and thoughtful/informed responses. Thanks all
And whats amazing with Philadelphia is the amount of serious change / improvements in a relatively short period of time.
I moved out of the city 4 years ago (for work), every time I return, I'm amazed at the increased energy, new food options, shopping options, hotels, cleaned up streets, etc.
Philadelphia still has a ways to go in many neighborhoods, but the bones are there and the investment is finally pouring in. Philadelphia is one of the few American cities where you can have a true big city experience and at a relatively affordable price (although prices are noticeably increasing in core neighborhoods).
Boston is fantastic and a bit more polished, BUT, its noticeably smaller and quieter. Its also a bit isolated from the other large cities and colder and snowier than Philadelphia in the winter.
SF has a terrible smell throughout also, that would drive me insane were I living there.
Strange when I was there I didn't smell anything bad. I would put San Fransisco above Philadelphia, Washington Dc. and Boston . Its downtown is more complete and better views.
I”m going to an odd route here. For me it’s Portland, ME. Love the old port and it’s quaint New England charm. I’m also a foodie and imo Portland, ME is very underrated in that catagorey.
While I love SF, I can’t think of anything it’s DT has that Boston doesn’t, from an urban living perspective. Hell you can buy pot at the store in Boston, gamble at a resort casino, find a job in any field, go to the beach, eat shop drink party til you drop. What more do you want. Symphony and excellent museums, sport etc. it’s all there.

Maybe I was there at a bad time. Not sure... Some would say the same about Florida's gulf coast cities during red tide season, I guess... There was just something very... off and musty when I visited.
