Fascinating article I was reading about Dallas this afternoon about it leading the nation with the most number of available/vacant lots in the CBD, based on research by Yardi Matrix and Property Shark. (2018)

The rankings started with the city with the most available acreage, according to the study.

https://www.dmagazine.com/commercial...ajor-u-s-city/

Here is a snapshot of their top 10 list, with many surprises, including Dallas (for me anyway):

1) Dallas
2) Las Vegas
3) Austin
4) San Antonio
5) Phoenix
6) Minneapolis
7) Indianapolis
8) Salt Lake City
9) Atlanta
10) Tucson

I am extremely surprised to see Minneapolis and Austin here. Austin is booming, so I'm sure that won't last.

My *guesses* would've included Vegas near the top, along with Phoenix in there for sure, and cities that sprawl out really wide, like Jacksonville or maybe Oklahoma City.

What other cities would you have expected to be in the top 10?

Dallas is second with the most development Downtown also....second to only NY City.

The stats:
--Omit Seattle, San Francisco, and others.
--Appear to be only office space. In other words, the reporter is an idiot.

Even with limited "downtown" boundaries, several cities would be in the tens of millions.

I should have probably looked more into that graph. Here is the data - Total CBD construction in square footage since 2013:

1. NYC: 29,616,844 sq ft
2. Dallas: 8,506,240
3. Chicago: 6,979,051
4. Houston: 6,529,568
5. Los Angeles: 4,973,752
6. Washington DC: 2,289,886
7. Milwaukee: 2,127,176
8. Austin: 2,096,160
9. Miami: 2,042,506
10. Kansas City: 1,714,257
11. Orlando: 1,660,572
12. Phoenix: 1,592,330
13. Cincinnati: 1,584,038
14. Salt Lake City: 1,582,976
15. Minneapolis: 945,073
16. Atlanta: 707,443
17. Tampa: 635,958
18. Buffalo: 599,565
19. Rochester, NY: 489,321
20. San Antonio: 478,272
21. Indianapolis: 436,512
22. Sacramento: 304,253
23. San Jose: 273,967
24. Las Vegas: 79,967
25. Tucson: 25,736

I'm guessing this only counts completed construction. Also there are some glaring omissions like San Francisco here. I really only pay attention to NYC and Chicago for development. Both have a lot going on right now and in the pipeline. Curious how much Dallas has as well. Won't talk about NYC because it's so far ahead of everything else now. Chicago currently has millions of square feet under construction downtown and has multiple millions coming up.

Very misleading title to this thread since this report is only about 25 random cities and ignores cities that are superstars in the world of CBD construction projects (Boston, Charlotte, Nashville, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, among others). Therefore, this thread is now closed.
