The US Commerce Dept puts out it's own jobs figures and here is the annual count for the period between 2009 through 2018.
Data by CSA, except San Diego, Tampa and Austin which are by MSA.

The average annual compensation gives a clue, though really you can get lost in the weeds the more stats you throw up to get context. It’s a nice snapshot of the growth centers in this economic expansion. Virginia Beach surprises me.
Well think about it - the more people there are in an area, the more service sector jobs there will be. If there’s a 1 to 1 ratio, then the job growth is a result of population growth and not vice versa.
It goes to quality of job. And how recession proof an area is. Service sector jobs suffer the most during a recession as places in Florida and Nevada can tell you
It’s a chicken and egg thing. Jobs follow people and people follow jobs. As I said, the annual compensation does an adequate job of pointing out places that stick out for service jobs (like Orlando).

You're totally right. I missed these posts when I was coming up with my thoughts. I'm always about context when it comes to statistics because on its own, it can be construed in so many ways.
