How is that a head-scratcher? Atlanta has arguably more influence in a general sense in the u.s. than San Francisco does.
Not really. San Francisco is hated by literally half the country in the most visceral way.
This is a political ad in Georgia.
This was a political ad in Missouri.
This was a political ad by the NRA.
Just search 'Fox News San Francisco'.
The Bay Area occupies a whole lot of space in right wing media and social media circles.
Everywhere I go in this country people have a very strong opinion about SF-even people who have never even set foot here, are adamant that they know more about where I live than I do.
Does that happen to anyone else? I hope not.
I suppose this is part of why I started looking at data, to see if there was truth to what naysayers were saying.

Yes San Fran has the larger economy but when you start thinking of culture, social, sports, music, regional impact, entertainment, diversity of economy, history, etc... than Atlanta is higher imho...
Well, SF invented the television. Can u beat that as far as impact?
Otherwise, we also changed the way the entire human race communicates, procures information, shares information, etc.
Social media is now multi-trillion dollar enterprise that anyone in a free country can access, for free, anywhere in the world.
So while I agree that there are some areas in which Atlanta is more influential domestically, SF is playing a completely different game altogether, that extends well beyond the US.
Just look at the airports...
ATL: 8 Foreign Flag Airlines'
Air Canada Express: Toronto–Pearson
Air France: Paris–Charles de Gaulle
KLM: Amsterdam
Korean Air: Seoul–Incheon
Lufthansa: Frankfurt
Qatar Airways: Doha
Turkish Airlines: Istanbul
Virgin Atlantic: London–Heathrow, Manchester (UK)
WestJet: Calgary
SF would be better compared to D.C. in terms of economic weight where Atlanta would be more comparable to Seattle. ATL and SEA put out fairly similar GDP's while SF is literally the innovation capital of the nation currently and it isnt slowing down despite its significant downfalls.
In terms of regional influence, Atlanta shines more than SF but in terms of international influence, SF no contest. In terms of national influence I'd still give the edge to SF due to its progressive stature. Although I particularly am not much a fan of what they are doing out there, being realistic it comes up as a subject a crapton more than Atlanta does... ...although admittedly I'm not sure this is a good thing.
I want to add something, too. I gave great consideration to San Jose, which I believe us beginning to shed its image as a SF suburb. Rightfully so. But i dont think alone it's a Top 20 city yet, a lot of physical and educational output coming from SJ, but its tremendous growth is obviously and clearly fueled from SF's muscle...
But again with that said, SJ is starting to distance itself as a respectable city in it's own right, and i think moving forward into the new decade, we have to respect that it may become even more of a power. I have it in my Top 25 most important cities, but it has to continue growing positively. It doesn't have the legacy of Baltimore to give it benefit of doubt. But it's coming and i think by 2030 we may have to accept that it's a Top 20 power...
It will be interesting to see if SJ's continued ascent causes SF to lose a little luster and stature...
Probably the only city in the world that's viewed as a suburb of a city smaller than itself.
