DC and NYC. After that LA/Chicago/SF. Those are def the top 5, with DC and NYC being the most important.

Some cool news regarding a treatment for sickle cell disease that’s being developed by two Boston/Cambridge companies:

aight lets see

1 NYC - no comment needed

2 DC (really only above LA because of how important our national government is, otherwise LA would be two)
3 LA - too big for 4/5, no real comment needed

4 Chicago - de facto logistics hub of the MW with other large industries
5 SF/Bay Area - tech/innovation hub and trendsetter of culture sometimes

6 Houston - oil/energy, healthcare
7 Philadelphia - important city with healthcare, pharmaceuticals
8 Boston - education, innovation, healthcare
9 Dallas - definitely bigger than Boston or even Philly but doesn't have a truly defining industry

10 ATL - hub of Southeast culture, logistics, etc.
11 Seattle - tech, most defining city in the PNW
12 Miami - has a lot of issues but is the Latin American hub in the US, very international which is a huge plus IMO

13 Minneapolis/St. Paul - diversified economy with lots of retail HQ's
14 Phoenix - hub of the SW, but should be higher up given its size
15 Denver - hub of the Mountain West, diversified economy
16 San Diego - trade hub, international area, biomed if I remember correctly
17 Detroit - has obviously gone downhill but improvements are happening and location to Canada is a plus
18 Charlotte - finance, energy, the biggest and most important city for the Carolinas

19 Orlando - tourism obviously, but has more than people realize
20 Pittsburgh - advanced manufacturing, healthcare
21 Baltimore - trade, ports, cybersecurity i think, location both helps and hurts it
22 St. Louis - food and beverage manufacturing, utilities i think
23 Tampa/St. Pete - defense, finance, tech; kind of underperforms for a region its size
24 Austin - tech/innovation, retail; really booming area but has infrastructure problems I believe
25 Portland - tech, retail; cool place and bigger than you think but don't quite know how it stacks up favorably against other similar places

Interesting you mention logistics. There is a massive project in the early stages that will eventually transform a defunct refinery in Philadelphia (1300 acres) into a logistics hub headed by Hilco.
Could be a game changer for Philadelphia as the de facto logistics hub of the Northeast over the next 10-20 years.

I’d argue Boston is top 3 until pandemic over and then in the 6/7 range...Boston/Cambridge is
a major player on vaccines and research in covid times..first us vaccine to hit phase 3 will be out of Cambridge

Yes. It is the 2nd largest financial hub in the country and home to 2 of the top 10 banks in the country. And it is the defacto (functional) HQ for a 3rd top 10 bank in the US.
