All except for Lowell are in mini “Renaissance’s” but still very gritty, and not much change in the ground outside in Chelsea.

Chelsea has dramatically reduced poverty and crime since 2010. In 2013 it was ranked in the top 15 most dangerous cities in the US. Now I’m not sure it’s toP 100. Poverty is down from 30%+ to ~20%, population has exploded. There are now hipsters in Chelsea’s neighborhood. Still quite gritty but not foreboding and intimidating like it was. Feels almost eclectic now.

I agree with Massachoicetts it feels more like an NYC neighborhood.

Lynn is about to get the waterfront redevelopment that Revere is getting but as far as I know of it’s not much different just a bit safer and more inclusive/functional. But I think in 2018!it did have 14 homicides.

Worcester has built a new ball park, and many new restaurants. It’s experiencing 2.5 billion dollars in mostly private reinvestment. Still when I’m as there (same trip as Revere beach) it felt decidedly hood in its downtown. Like Bridgeport. All socioeconomic metrics are about the same or worse than in 2011. So while it’s caught people eye and there’s too down development, it has bore most of its fruit yet.

Massachoicetts and I very much disagree on the quality of Worcester. Really feels like a dump with me and they’re putting lipstick in a pig and just doing basic long delayed “revitalization” of roadways. I think the city has a pretty sucky vibe. Inner look awful and feels Less safe than what crime stats suggest.

Lowell is pretty stagnant with violent crime or at least homicide being worse now than it was in 2005. This past decade hasn’t done much h for Lowell. Some expansion of the UMASS Lowell has brightened some formerly vacant lots. It’s reputation has neither nor benefited been hurt as of late. have an archaic City Council with no vision and very little ties to the community they represent. The city is still considered much much better h th an nearby Lawrence MA,

Side note: another man was shot overnight in Dorchester.

Another man was found shot this morning at a holiday in in Quincy MA (abuts Dorchester) https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/07/...ay-inn-quincy/

Philly as of 7/29: 247

Philly having a bad week given that the homicide count into last weekend was 233. That’s 14 homicides in 5 days.

Within its 6 square miles, the Dorchester neighborhood has 26 of Boston’s 37 homicides. For a rate of 25 per 100k.

Dorchester is on pace for a year end homicide rate of 43 per 100k-21x higher than the state average.

It'll still end with a very low murder rate, it's just that NYC has been experiencing such low levels of violence that any spike would make it seem crazier than it actually is. NYC might be going through something it hasn't seen in a while, but I don't think this is a shift in momentum at all, especially not to the degree of thinking it's a revert of 25 years of progress.

Now if NYC had a Chicago-esque increase of like 200 murders, then yes, I'd be very concerned. But a 20% increase or whatnot, it was gonna happen eventually. Its downward trajectory for the last 5 years was nothing short of legendary, and getting below 300 was a monumental feat that was once a distant fantasy. It may be a very long time before we see NYC even reach 10/100k murder rate again (if ever), which is standard for large cities in this country.
