Pittsburgh is now at either 33 or 34 (still waiting for my colleague in homicide to come in to confirm---but I think it's actually 34). Any higher numbers posted on here reflect suburbs that use Pittsburgh zip codes (confusing, I know, but Allegheny County has 130 separate towns---many of which use a "Pittsburgh, PA" zip code).
It was only a matter of time before New York started to increase. It's a miracle a city that big had crime rates that low.
I strongly disagree with this sentiment - once you reach a certain threshold (100k+), there is zero correlation between size of city and its violent crime rates.
Why was the increase inevitable given it got so low?
A city of 8 million having less murders that some smaller big city isn't common. New York averaged 500 murders before DeBlasio took office. It then dropped below 300. It was only a matter of time before it rose again.

Sure. But the drastic decline in NYC wasn't gonna continue forever.
Philly and Chicago are a daily basis in terms of homicides,
Philly homicides as of 9/3: 307
...and not to leave Chicago out, 5 killed, including a 17 y.o. black male, 7 wounded yesterday, a Thursday.
All hands on deck in Chicago ths weekend, 8000 cops hit the streets. Not sure how effective this will be given the nature of these random interactions and specific targeting (with the collateral deaths of innocent bystanders and as we saw last weekend in Chicago...diners eating outside on a Sunday afternoon at a friggin’ pancake house).
There’s also FBI adveisories that gang bangers are out to kill CPD officers. Not surprising given the emboldened and ratched-up aggressiveness of criminals this summer.
Something like 51cops shot at this year in Chicago with 4 shot in a month.
Just last week a man or kid was killed in Philly while PPD officers were talking to him on the street...as in...in front of the cops. Believe it was a drive by shooting.
Jacksonville 125
Tampa 21
St Pete 14
Orlando 16 or so, not positive on this one
Tampa and Orlando are wrong, I believe. Orlando is in the 30s and Tampa is in the high 20s. I forget how much exactly, but I remember seeing an article recently.

Before DeBlasio took office homicides were under 500, then hovered around mid300s, dipped below 300, with 318 in 2019, now 2020 is up about 33% YTD.
That’s a huge increase in a year and is not inevitable. Whatever was working before isn’t working now, at least in 2020. This isn’t an incremental increase year over year.
