Summer months tend to have the most murders, so really comparing year to year by month is probably a better way to look at this, although a lot more work. Said another way June-Oct is always going to have a higher murder rate than Jan-May. It's definitely up more than usual this year, but comapring years is probably best.

So its really crazy that in one month earlier this year St. Louis had 53 homicides in july and it only has 300,000 people compared to Philadelphias 1,580,000. Just shows how much worse St. Louis is then Philadelphia. Its not even close.

HJ counts justified killings. And with Philly's population rising and Chicago's declining, I'm pretty certain Philly is closer to 62% of Chicago's population now.

But the PPD website only counts unsolved and non justifiable homicides, and their count is at 411 for this year.

Exactly. And St Louis has less people than Pittsburgh now, yet 53 homicides will probably be almost, if not more than Pittsburgh's 2020 total.

Houston was having a terrible year already by April, well before the protests, it's either stayed high or slightly increased sicne then, over 300 by this time hasn't happened since the 2006 spike attributed to Katrina.

Many cities were seeing a jump in homicides since the pandemic started. Summer months made that even worse. And it doesn't look like that'll stop anytime soon.

Homicides doesn't include justified & police related incidents. Therefore won't be recorded as such.
