I have my doubts too, but there were 612 murders by Oct 25th of 2016 according to CPD. And yet that year ended with 769 murders, because Nov month was excessively deadly. Coincidentally, that was also the month and year of the election, and here again another year with 600+ homicides before Nov and election like clockwork. The one thing that is different thus far is this past Oct was not as deadly as in 2016.

I do agree that heyjackass is a great source if you want to know the amount of homicides.

They do clarify how homicide is defined in their editor's note:

All murders are homicides, but not all homicides are murders. We count homicides, whereas the CPD counts murders. A homicide, or a non-fatal shooting, regardless of type or by whom, within the city limits of Chicago counts towards our total metric, including anything on the expressways. CPD-involved, ISP-involved and justifiable homicides all count. Reckless homicides may count if the Medical Examiner rules that the cause of death was a homicide. Suicides do not count. Additional definitions can be found on the Glossary page.

And the Chicago Police have forever been accused by many of falsifying statistics and reclassifying cases, etc. No source is trusted by everyone. The Sun-Times to WGN to the Tribune will all report different numbers in a day or over a weekend and so-on. Chicago has historically had the most corrupt police department in the nation and Chicago has often been labeled the F.B.I's most corrupt city in the U.S. so taking anything reported by the city as the "official" source is dubious.

Austin, TX at 42. The city actually might hit 50 for the first time in a really long time.

The metro area at 60. Looks like Austin will be pushing homicide rates like the 1990's.

There's an incredible naunce to cover large numbers as such and details to each case add more layers at times. Chicago is one of the historic corrupt cities & police departments.

I don't think the coroners results will be dubious all the time.
