Like another poster mentioned, stricter gun laws (albeit 80% of guns come illegally from the U.S, which is a huge problem) along with less historical segregation, better and more social programs (social housing/affordable housing, welfare, universal health care, more accessibility to facilities, etc..), tolerance amongst people, more trust in police force (this is dwindling pretty fast though) more eyes on the street, etc.. It is not perfect, but a lot of progress has been made as time goes on.

Not surprised tbh, spent a good amount of time there and it’s a really rough town in a lot of areas, even some of its suburbs like Harker Heights are not that nice.

How many cities have more homicides than Covid deaths in 2020? I'd wager most, it's true for Cleveland at least.

Don’t even know where you are getting that idea from. Probably very few besides the ones with the highest homicide rates, like Cleveland, St Louis(which does have 301 covid deaths, higher than the homicide count). Philadelphia has had 2,500 covid deaths compared to 499 homicides. Washington DC has had 799 covid deaths, compared to several hundred homicides. Basically there are a couple of cities that have really bad homicide rates that basically match up with their covid death rate. There’s been about 330,000 covid deaths during 2020, compared to maybe 20,000 homicides(maybe lower).

Is your point to lessen severity of Covid or to acknowledge Cleveland’s high homicide rate

Do you have an answer to the question? I'm seriously wondering.

It's been over 20 years since Houston seen 400 murders. I remember the city coming close to 400 the year after Katrina, when Houston took in thousands of N.O. evacuees. Some of those numbers are crazy for the cities listed.

The only positive part of gentrification is that crime/murder goes down.

It’s probably both honestly. I don’t think pointing out that one city has a higher murder number than covid number is bad in of itself, but when someone tries to extrapolate from that that most cities have higher murder rates than covid death rates it’s nonsense, when the answer is most obviously covid numbers trumping murder numbers by a long shot for most urban areas with a couple of exceptions here and there.

On Saturday the body of a missing New Jersey woman was found in Philadelphia, 3 days after she was last seen alive. This could bring the city's count from 499 to 500.
