In a sense I guess Austin would hold some importance value over San Diego with the presence of UT and being the capital of Texas. Oddly enough I seemingly continously forget that I live in the states capital when I think of living here in Austin. I guess it feels like DFW and Houston vastly overshadow Austin in terms of importance feel but the political factor in Austin probably is a bit stronger than San Diego.
In terms of diversity and culture though? Nuhuh...not unless sometime during my life hipsterism has become a new culture... I'd rank it the same as San Diego in that aspect.

UCSD is a better/higher ranked school and research university than UT. I think it's had a much greater impact nationally for research, science, and innovation than UT. In addition to UCSD there is also SDSU (one of the top state universities in CA), USD, and Cal State San Marcos.

I think I posted the above in the wrong thread anyway, I was thinking of the San Diego vs Austin thread. but it is what it is. Im not very fluent with the universities in Cali.

UCSD might be higher ranked as far as STEM goes but UT is more well rounded in that it also has top 20 ranked Law School (16) and MBA programs (T-19). Last I checked no schools in SD crack the top 50 in these areas.
If there is one common theme I have noticed over the years, there is a lack of respect for Law and MBA degrees on CD (not just from SD either).

I was referring to overall rankings, not just STEM.

Even in this thread, USC, UCLA, and Caltech had cemented L.A.'s status as a world leader in higher education by 1919.
We can probably throw that on the pile of reasons people pick L.A. too.
Boston and NYC easily rank ahead of LA in terms of higher education.
Yeah so? Doesn't mean LA still isn't very highly regarded in terms of higher education. And again, it would be a reason for someone to pick LA as a city to move to over SD--better quality and more options for higher education.

Even though this is in the wrong thread-since when does being a state capital confer any importance to anyone?
It's usually something you downplay or just don't even mention, but this isn't the first time I"ve seen it brought up to boost Austin. Sacramento is the capital of what is by far the biggest and most powerful state-they draw exactly zero importance from that.
