I know it's a popular city & is well liked by certain parts of the population for what it does offer, but objectively speaking, should it come up at all when discussing major city amenities and what it's offering to residents and visitors alike?

I get that the term major can be somewhat vague, so let's just say we draw the line for major at Miami & Atlanta on the other side of the coast. So considering that, would you say it belongs?

The criteria for this discussion can include (but not limited to) culture, things to do, urban vibe/atmosphere etc.

Yes, of course. I mean it does have a 1 million plus residents.

Well, you put the cutoff at Atlanta (38th largest city in the US) and Miami (43rd). San Diego is way up there as the 8th largest city in the country, so it would be peculiar to leave it out. How could a city of 460k be "major" while a city of 1.4 million is not?

Many people judge Miami (7th) and Atlanta (9th) by MSA, which at 6M is nearly double the population size of San Diego MSA (17th). Neither of these 2 cities is overshadowed by a larger more well known city within its own state, just 90 miles away. Same reason we don’t judge SF by its city size (if we did, it is just 60% the population of SD—does that mean it’s less relevant??)

SD should still be in the conversation of major cities, though not in the top 10 as these 2 other cities always are (it’s just a shade below).

Is anyone really claiming that Atlanta and Miami shouldn't be labeled "MAJOR cities?"

I was replying to Salbot...quite a difference in City of Miami’s 463,000 population vs its MSA of 6M. Much more of a difference than City of SD population of 1.5M vs its MSA of 3.3M. I don’t think anyone would say the City of SD is 4x more dense than the City of Miami.

No. And I'm sure San Diegoans don't care about it.

Lol...probably true and/or at the very least they will tell and remind you “we’re not LA”.
