background:

Me: nearly 40, Fed employee
Him: Mid thirties, medical field

Current situation: My husband and I are currently living and loving Harlem, USA. We recieved had our first, she turns 1 next week. However after looking at our family planning we have decided that relocating offers some get benefits. We have decided to found a place that offers:

Less tax burden
House inventory
Close to family

The after looking at openings and our timeline to relocate by 2021 (We are hoping to have another within the next 18 mons.) we have opportunities in 4 area. Our personal preference are Dallas and Orlando metro areas.

The final area of concern is being a LGBT, African-American couple.

We are hoping to get feedback on:

Being black in these areas
Being Gay in these areas
being black and gay in these areas
true cost of living
Social scene
politics of the area (we have only leave in Blue states. I am aware that all Red cities are not the same, and would hate to lump all the residents into my group, just wanted some idea of what we would be walking into.
Lastly area where would consider moving/buying in
School systems ratings/review

Hope to hear from you guys soon!

I second Dallas. Orlando is not gay and black friendly. Dallas is a metro area rich in culture, opportunities, and a safe family environment for your children. My cousin lives with her partner in south Dallas area and loves it! Dallas leans liberal.

How is Orlando not gay and black friendly? Particularly gay. Are you aware of all of the events centered around LGBT here?

https://www.hometogo.com/inspiration/pride-travel/

Top 5 best places for gays to visit.
Look up the pride parade, gay days, etc. etc.

It’s actually the other way around, “no contest.”

For the record, Orlando is more liberal than Dallas, and it’s surrounding counties are purple, unlike the red-leaning counties surrounding Dallas.

Orlando HANDS DOWN!! Orlando has a HUGE and thriving LGBT community, the city is a magnet for LGBT conferences/events/festivals (Ex: Disney Gay Days, Orlando Pride Festival, etc.) and even politically is very pro-LGBT with a longtime serving openly gay city council member and a longtime serving mayor who is a huge pro-LGBT ally.

The poster above is the same one who has, on several occasions, said that Downtown Orlando is “very touristy and pretentious,” a claim that no human being with a lick of knowledge about the place would ever make. So it comes as no surprise to see such a misguided post.

Kind of crazy statement considering I always hear about how Orlando has a thriving lgbt community and it’s a “good” city for Black ppl. It’s not like DFW doesn’t have issues when it comes to race. And the city of Dallas is pretty blue and so are a few of their suburbs closest to the city or it’s southern burbs but it’s surrounded by ALOT of Red too.

With all that said I honestly don’t know too much about Orlando but what I do know is Orlando COL is a little bit more expensive than Dallas. There’s also a lot of highly rated schools in the DFW metro area, majority are located in the Northern burbs. Just based off schools and col I’d probably go with DFW over Orlando. You have more options to choose from since it’s a bigger metro.

I lived in Orlando 18 years, I don’t think you’ll have any problems.

Far more fun things to do for kids and families than Dallas.

I'm still chuckling at that post. Our women's soccer team is even named after LGBT.
